Hello. It's been a while.
Have a look at the second picture here. Is it me, or, er...?

Having zoomed it myself, I find that hard to believe, but who am I to question that esteemed publication.

I mean, rationally-speaking, I don't doubt that it is - but I'm struggling to believe it without a fight.

Yep.
I found the "original" images here, and now I understand. It's shadow/reflection weirdness, and compression.

Yeah. If I screw up my eyes, I can see it as "2333", so I guess it's just pareidolia. Maybe there was a mote of dust on it, or whatever.

But relatively impressive I suppose that they were able to do that live, at all.

The only evidence I have to go on is the line in Spaced ("Babylon 5's a big pile of shit!") and the sheer mind-numbing awfulness of the soundtrack, composed by ex Tangerine Dream hero Chris Franke.
( , Fri 5 May 2023, 8:38, Reply)

Eh, bits of it were. I loved it at the time, but in retrospect season 1 was a slog, but necessary for the back story. Seasons 2 to 4 were good. Season 5 and all the TV movies were not. Even then the episode quality varied wildly within the series.
The spinoff series Crusade was a fucking dumpster fire that should have been canned far earlier than it was.
( , Fri 5 May 2023, 11:07, Reply)

A lot of the acting was excruciating, but there were some real superb performances. Jakar and Molari being the obvious choices. It starts slowly but the the big story unfolded into something awesome.
I've watched the whole series 3 times now =) It's a kind of cosy friendship.
( , Fri 5 May 2023, 12:28, Reply)

In general it stood up OK. The story was strong enough to carry the wobbly sets and early CGI.
I'll agree with you about the acting, but would say that some of the actors were let down by having to deliver some pretty hammy dialogue.
( , Fri 5 May 2023, 14:48, Reply)

The actor who played Ivanova was terrible, and everyone's hair was always too clean. Those rogue telepaths living down below, for example, should have been stinking, grubby, unkempt, but apparently there's a load of free showers, shampoo and conditioner down there.
( , Fri 5 May 2023, 15:20, Reply)

JMS apparently laid out the plot from beginning to end first, rather than seemingly making it up as he went as writers often do these days.
( , Fri 5 May 2023, 13:12, Reply)

The incidental music is mostly unobtrusive... It's marmite, I've never been enthusiastic about it, but I've met fans who absolutely love it and seek out every CD. I never paid much attention to it at the time. The main theme is fine, the establishing shot stings are good, the rest is quite unmemorable.
As others have said, S1 is slow (and a bit stiff in a militaristic way), 2, 3 and 4 are great, 5 is not so good (the network cancelled season 5 forcing the writer to compress everything into season 4, then they were so impressed with season 4 that they uncancelled season 5, but there were only subplots left to tie up by that point).
The aborted 'Excalibur' spinoff is not quite as bad as Lexx. It's interesting to watch as you can practically see the executive interference ruining the show in real time. The various straight to video movies are okay, but not essential viewing.

My somewhat feral rescue cats calmed down over 3-6 months, but you would expect them to do that without a hormone plugin too.
( , Fri 5 May 2023, 15:26, Reply)

The synthetic feline hormone is not something humans can sense. Cats supposedly can, but I'm not convinced.
Our sense of smell evokes memories of our unique individual experiences. There is no known universally calming smell for humans. The same is most probably true for cats and most, if not all our other animal cousins.
Your cat probably likes its own cat-stink a lot more than the expensive odourless magic water from the pet shop. The pet shop has yet to find a way to sell you your own cats body odour in cartridge form but it would if it could.
( , Fri 5 May 2023, 22:19, Reply)

Nor do I have a cat. Pretty sure it's actually a pheromone, which apparently works really well according to my cat-owning friend. I'm told that the Feliway plugs give off something called "feline appeasing pheromone".
If humans can make musk, it's not too much of a stretch (to me) that there's a chemical that makes people feel a little less stressed. I mean, pheromones would hardly work if they were specific to the individual would they? Lavender is the common one, though it might well be a placebo. Hard to test that.
I defer to FCM.
( , Sat 6 May 2023, 0:28, Reply)

It is not proven that adult humans have adequate pheromone receptors. There's some info on the human vomeronasal organ debate here: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6050168/
Feliway is the very expensive magic water cartridge I'm talking about. There's a summary of Feliway research studies here: whatyourcatwants.com/feliway
There are chemicals (drugs, medicines) that make humans less stressed, but these chemicals are not pheromones that we can (or probably can't even) smell, and smell is not the direct medium by which these chemicals affect the brain. These chemicals also have fairly unique/non-uniform effects on individuals.

You don't air-burst your bomb above a building you want to damage unless it's a fucking big bomb. This gives maximum exposure with minimum risk of damage.
Still, there's three possibilities here:
1. Ukraine sticking two fingers up in a deniable way.
2. Dissident Russians.
3. False flag.
If I were a betting person I'd go with 1.
( , Wed 3 May 2023, 15:53, Reply)

I'm going with 2. Highly unlikely to be a false flag considering how shit it was, but I'm sure that won't deter Putin and Co from seizing the opportunity for a little extra propaganda.
( , Wed 3 May 2023, 16:15, Reply)

probably just an anti-government type up to some wacky hi-jinx ahead of Victory Day.
( , Wed 3 May 2023, 16:37, Reply)

Not that I'm in any way suggesting that the current Russian Government isn't actively and enthusiastically repressive when it comes to outspoken members of the population exercising anti-war/anti-Putin rhetoric - but the suggestion that anyone remotely critical of the current regime is whisked away in the night and tossed into a Gulag for the rest of their natural lives sounds a little too much like bad '80s movie to me.
The Navalny documentary paints a pretty accurate picture of Putin's Russia in my opinion. Certainly not the kind of place where protest and dissent is encouraged by any means, and about as far-detached from the bastion of liberalist societal and political freedoms that is Ukraine - but hardly North Korea, either.
( , Thu 4 May 2023, 6:48, Reply)

( , Thu 4 May 2023, 13:22, Reply)

Dissident Russians could be working for/with/on behalf of Ukraine, or they could be duped by the FSB, or they could be duped by the FSB to work on behalf of Ukraine. Or Ukraine could be duped into action by the FSB in order to expose dissident Russians.

( , Wed 3 May 2023, 17:06, Reply)

These situations are often convoluted and complicated. The whole thing could just be a random blunder.
It could have been one Russian teenager with a toy drone and a bag of petrol. It could have been a proof of concept/demonstration flight for the benefit of the Russians, Ukranians, or any number of other interested parties (arms companies, nation states, Russian states, elements within the Russian government/organised crime networks). It could even have been a harmless drone flight (perhaps connected to the people seen climbing up the side of the dome) shot down by a deeply flawed Molotov-based anti-drone system.
