Oh Hell(raiser), another remake.
Needs more dulcet Doug Bradley and Andrew Robinson of course. In a way it’s impressive just how many films they’ve managed to squeeze out of the original short story.
I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt; there have been a few decent shows on Hulu. My main hope is that they make it a single series, there’s nothing worse than dragging out a show unnecessarily then tacking on a cliffhanger at the end. It’s like the entertainment equivalent of blue balls.

David Bruckner being behind this gives me hope.
The Ritual and The Night House were both excellent and it can't be any worse than the previous eight sequels. Hopefully.
In an ideal world, an adaptation of the Scarlet Gospels would have made an absolutely fantastic feature film, but I suspect the producers would have had a hell (lol) of a hard time staying true to the novel without enraging the Woke Police. Plus, the budget required to faithfully recreate some of the imagery is probably a bit beyond Hulu's financial grasp.
Speaking of budget, that looks suspiciously like paint rather than prosthetics on Pinhead's neck, which isn't a good start...

( , Thu 22 Sep 2022, 9:23, Share, Reply)
Not necessarily genderless, but androgynous.
I think the general consensus is that he's 'male' based on the title of 'Hell Priest' as opposed to 'Hell Priestess'. The book likens his voice to that of an excited girl, but I suspect that's a figurative description as opposed to a literal one.
On paper, Jamie Clayton is a fantastic pick for the role. But I think they've made Pinhead a little bit too feminine in appearance. All the shots so far scream "that's a female Cenobite", when instead it should be largely ambiguous. I reckon Asia Kate Dillon would have been a better choice given the somewhat limited looking casting budget.
Still, old Doug was hardly the poster boy for androgyny either, so it's not massively relevant as long as she doesn't make a complete dog's dinner of the role.

Even if Hulu could afford her, I don't think any better-known actors would risk associating themselves a Hellraiser sequel
Gwendoline Christie would have been a good shout. But again, I don't imagine she's that desperate for work. I suspect the vast majority of the cast are going to be ex-pornstars and early 00's has-beens if the acting chops of that bloke in the first few seconds are anything to go by.

I’ll get round to watching Metropolis one of these days.
I’ve only seen the Japanese anime version (that supposedly only resembles the original by sheer coincidence). Anyway, the colourisation looks surprisingly good; perhaps AI-assisted?
For another modern take on early German cinema have a look at Shadow of the Vampire. It really is very good.

I’ve no idea. I didn’t think resolution really applies to film emulsions.
The poor quality might be more a consequence of the age of the film when it was duplicated or digitised. It’s fair to say that they weren’t filming with good glass at 60fps though.
Do have a look at that vampire film, it has Eddie Izzard, Udo Kier, and Cari Els explaining how to do slow-motion while wielding a Luger.

Isn't a lot of the issues with quality/resolution often down to the prints/transfer that have been seen in subsequent decades rather than the original?
Thinking mainly of copies used by or made for TV rather than more recent restorations.

apart from the fact that more than 90% of all films made before 1945 are lost forever and German cinema turned predominantly into a steaming pile of shit after 1945 (with exceptions, of course)
