apart from the algorithm, my view from my limited experience with twitter, is that the one's who build up followings, apart from those who are already famous irl or are ploughing some niche comedy account, are those who take up extreme positions on the left or right and just hammer it without, preaching to their bubble. Whenever there's been some big issue and I've looked at twitter, it's those ones that are at the top. being moderate and sensible and nuanced and conciliatory doesn't win you followers.
