Following through from last week's b3ta newsletter, where Rob contemplates "some kind of wiping arse game", I bring you: The Shit Shit Game.
Nothing more than a lavatorial number-guessing game, simply guess the number of sheets of cheap and nasty toilet paper you need to wipe your arse clean. Guess too little? Walk around with a shit stain in your trousers. Guess too much? Whince as your sphincter glows a firey red.
Mildly NSFW due to faux pixel shittiness and toilet-related noises.

interesting
I assumed it was doing pattern analysis against an existing dataset, and won 6 in a row (interspaced with draws) by thinking "what would the move it would predict to be the most common be?".
This is where you'll tell me it's completely random and it was just dumb luck

Markov chains!
It really is a set of markov chains. There are a few of them of different lengths, and they estimate what your next move would be based on your previous moves (the number of moves differs according to the length of each markov chain). The results are then combined and then it picks the one to play against you. This is why it picks up patterns in what you're doing and you can confuse it if you radically change strategy.
This was a small fad a few years ago with stuff like www.rpscontest.com/ where people write bots. This one is based off ideas I got there but aiming more to be fun than excessively good.

ah, so just on my moves
thought it might start with coming up with a probabilistic response based on a dataset of all players choices, until the user has enough moves to establish a pattern. So just luck in first few choices. But the challenge after that was the same. Not just to be able to see patterns in your own choices but to to predict what the algorithm is most likely to think your next choice is, and this will change with each datapoint you give it. It's constantly changing your strategy.
A truly random choice would only settle on a 50% win/ loss, but we (humans) are quite bad at acting truly randomly unaided by things like dice, such as the "37" phenomenon www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6iQrh2TK98

Yeah, so it forgets everything if you create a new game or it just got far too annoying. The result is it is effectively totally random for the first 2 rounds, then it steadily becomes less random until after about 8 rounds randomness is only used to tie break on internal decisions.
You remind me, a couple of years back I bought urin.le hoping to create a sort of urinal themed wordle. The idea was to show configurations of urinals and their occupations and you would get to pick where to go, then if you picked the most popular one that day you win. Could never work out how to bootstrap it to get people in though.

I kept hitting paper and El Sombrero responded every time with paper. After getting into that loop I found that I could keep it going indefinitely, but throw in an occasional scissors and win every time. Stopped after 7x combo and 30 points. It seems that occasional pattern changes are not sufficient to trigger a change in the model's strategy?
( , Fri 10 May 2024, 16:28, Share, Reply)
You should check the leaderboards!
30 credits and 7 combo is just starting to get interesting. During development I'd regularly get hundreds of credits and double digit combos.
Markov chains do have mechanical ways to be beaten, and ultimately it would just become an endurance exercise.

Yes, I just stopped at that point because it was obvious I could keep winning indefinitely if I just maintained the same pattern.

Right now I'd have more confidence getting on an Aeroflot-operated Tu-154 than that.
(edit)
Given that the last flight was at best an ignoble failure, burning all its propellant due to software issues and leaving it unable to reach the ISS, and that the subsequent NASA investigation tore Boeing a new arsehole as a result, I'm staggered that Boeing aren't being compelled to demonstrate a successful autonomous flight to the ISS prior to a manned flight.

No safety of flight issues discovered during that flight
Two discovered post-flight though. Two separate issues with the parachute system so both very definitely safety of flight issues that were present during that flight and were absolutely a danger to the crew.
I remain unconvinced.
(edit)
One with the parachute cords, and the other with potentially flammable wiring.

Well they always say
that lots of problems in the automated flights could have been dealt with or even fixed by the crew (assuming they've told the crew how to prevent the autopilot from murdering them 737Max-style).

Not sure how you fix the parachute cords snapping on descent
You could try praying I suppose.

It can land on just one parachute though right?
And it has 3 in case 2 fail, which is wise because Boeing.

That was the design intent
It wasn't the case though:
"The issues seem rather serious to have been discovered weeks before Starliner was due to launch on an Atlas V rocket. The first involves "soft links" in the lines that run from Starliner to its parachutes. Boeing discovered that these were not as strong as previously believed.
During a normal flight, these substandard links would not be an issue. But Starliner's parachute system is designed to land a crew safely in case one of the three parachutes fails. However, due to the lower failure load limit with these soft links, if one parachute fails, it's possible the lines between the spacecraft and its remaining two parachutes would snap due to the extra strain.
The second issue involves P-213 glass cloth tape that is wrapped around wiring harnesses throughout the vehicle. These cables run everywhere, and Nappi said there are hundreds of feet of these wiring harnesses. The tape is intended to protect the wiring from nicks. However, during recent tests, it was discovered that under certain circumstances possible in flight, this tape is flammable."

Jebus.
I guess they could recreate the glory days of Gagarin and just have the crew bail out with personal parachutes.

It's all bollocks anyway.
I'm more concerned about how they're going to simulate the supposed 'curvature of the earth' once they open this up to the public. Lenticular windows would probably be the simplest solution, but surely they'll need something more robust than that to keep the wool pulled over the sheeple's eyes.

Dan Carlin's hardcore history podcast
Been a few others posting history podcasts. I'm recommending this bloke's if you havent come across him. His delivery is a bit like Christian Slater, but he's a very knowledgeable and well-sourced history buff who speaks with the ease and interest of the ex-radio host that he was.
Quite chunky, too, if you're looking to soundtrack running an ultra-marathon or something. The one above on early viking history he talks engagingly for 5 hours straight, and it's just part 1. you can find it at the usual podcasty places

Not a lot of people know this
But when playing guitar, Brian May uses a traditional English penny instead of a plastic anal bead to give him that higher range
