(, Wed 7 Jan 2026, 15:29, Reply)
AI is shit. I report about a dozen videos to YT every day because they're misleading AI slop that nobody wants to watch. YT are on borrowed time. I'm searching for an AI-free alternative almost every day now.
(, Wed 7 Jan 2026, 16:05, Reply)
I tried a couple of AI filter extensions but if anything I saw more AI bullshit than before.
YT's algorithm wants me to watch more similar things, so it regularly pushes exactly the same material plagiarised from humans, but made nonsensical and ultra-repetitive. I see so many of the same boxing and mma compilations because I once watched a popular video that's been copied by hundreds of AI grifters.
I'm seeing a lot of genuine looking fake accounts of real people, full of AI generated fake content detailing events that never happened.
Bizarrely I'm seeing a lot of fake animal 'stories' with visual vomit graphics and a script consisting of the same 3 paragraphs restated with tiny variations, over and over again. I'm seeing a bit of the revenge fantasy stuff that YT insists I need to become radicalised in some moronic way, and the American court procedures and bodycam footage designed to make me hate women and black people, but I block those channels completely even if they're real.
I worry that YT considers this kind of 'engagement' a good and useful thing for them, and that some super-algorithm is slowly turning me into a Manchurian Candidate or something. YT is fucked, almost completely untrustworthy, much like google.
(, Wed 7 Jan 2026, 18:00, Reply)
I just got recommended a blackface Dungeons & Dragons video.
It would appear that YT are deliberately showing me a slew of content they know I'll hate.

Negative overreaction is still a form of engagement
(, Thu 8 Jan 2026, 6:37, Reply)
It's possible they might be trying to drive away people who use effective ad blockers. It seems more likely that they're manipulating people with anger in the usual way (to radicalise them for profit).
Whatever their intention, the result is I'm using youtube less and publicly ranting about how shit it is.
(, Thu 8 Jan 2026, 15:45, Reply)
Mostly videos from channels I subscribe to. YouTube is simply no longer a great place for falling down rabbit holes. It used to surprise you. Now it’s optimised to keep you watching predictable cone tents.
(, Fri 9 Jan 2026, 6:10, Reply)
Interestingly or not, since I made this rant the slop ratio reduced to a tiny trickle. I also blocked about 1000 sloppy channels since then, and I've cut my usage down in general... Maybe that's what YT wanted and now it's 'rewarding' me for changing my behaviour. Whatever the case, I resent and distrust youtube completely.
Ultimately I need a less invasive, toxic and abusive alternative to youtube. So far everything I've tried is scammy (crypto, pyramid schemes), gimmicky (AI, AI, AI, ooh a P2P cloud based video distribution platform), or deliberately made to be obscure and disjointed (mostly, I guess, for pirate streaming purposes). The older YT rivals have also turned into an AI snotfest. Archive.org has some good stuff but no bandwidth...
Maybe I should go back to television. Anything good on?

Just wondered what the torque would be - assuming the video is its working speed, at max. power the output shaft would be transmitting about 2 million ft-lb of torque, or 2.8 million Nm.
That feels like an implausibly high number - feel free to check!
I assumed an output shaft speed of 30 rpm.
(, Wed 7 Jan 2026, 6:51, Reply)
that they only run it at 100 psi, but it was designed to run at 160? Huge torque indeed.

My dad was a overhead crane driver at River Don Works. I remember going to meet him and getting taken inside when I was about 8 or 9 and being terrified.
It was around that time we moved to a house in Woodhouse that had a view of Orgreave. It was amazing watching the chimneys flare up every few hours.

Published on January 15th by Bloomsbury, and illustrated by Gareth Conway (the guy who does the Greg The Sausage Roll books, so knows how to deploy brown), Poo! What? Where? is a fun, funny, strikingly information-dense book about that smelly stuff you push out of the smelly hole in your smelly bottom. I've done over 15,000 poos, mostly into or near toilets, so I know what I'm talking about.
NB. This is an Amazon link. The book is also available from less evil websites etc.

but I do consume a fair amount of 'mainstream' (reliably sourced and responsible) news, and the polls are what they are.
As it stands now (and as I understand it), the Faragists are going to win the most MPs but probably can't form a working majority without the active support of the Tories, DUP, etc. It has long been the position of the Tories that they will not go into coalition with the Faragists, so if they're true to their word (lol) we'll probably have a hung parliament with a minority government in shambles (with soft support from the Tory nutters), presenting the best opportunity for our competitors to fuck us over since WW2, and opening up the state to the worst elements of American vulture capitalism.
As I say, I don't do far-right news sources, and I have not harmed any vegetables to make these predictions.
