I know where you're coming frombut it's not really about obeying the letter of the law, is it? it's about a series of more and more highly-paid lawyers finding tiny loopholes, costing shitloads of taxpayers money. Because the council have to pay for their lawyers, whereas the travellers aren't. And won't be able to when they inevitabley get costs awarded against them, so the council/taxpayer will never get to recoup the hundreds of thousands being wasted on stupid appeals.

I think the thing is that I don't really care that much.But I generally think it's a good thing when the government/council forced to go through the same level of rigmarole that the rest of us usually are when we have to resort to the law.
I think people are also biased because they dislike the 'travellers' in this. I'm fairly neutral, I'm not predisposed to like shitty fake hippies or people enforcing planning regulations.

I really don't see the case for destroying an established community based on planning regulations.
If the council were doing their job properly they should have stopped the buildings when the first thing got put up there. Now they're settled and occupied it seems to me more important to protect the people living there that had nothing to do with building the stuff. The children and extended family members. Rather than take a stand for the sacred green belt.
It's the facts on the ground, they took a leaf out of the Jewish settlers book.
I don't see the big importance of planning permission anyway, the council would probably love a caravan park with nice middle class white people in the same place. That's not what it's about it's about gypsies living there.

Well that's an oversimplification isn't it.I'd rather a government (even local) even with the consent of the majority can't just get rid of people it doesn't like.
I'd rather a justice system that is flexible and independant rather than just sticking to the letter of the law.
And I'd rather people didn't get didn't get evicted from their homes pretty much ever.

Because I believe that everyone should get legal representation, innocent or guilty. From that article though; the problem the judge had with the notices was that they were too vague. The fact they didn't classify the "chalet type structures" and didn't specify fences gates and other built structures seems like the notices were badly drafted.
I also agree that claiming you can do "anything that is reasonably necessary" is far too wide for a legal document.
If you're doing something this high profile you have to be accurate and specific. Otherwise it gets picked apart in court. That's not a loophole. The fact it wasn't caused this delay, and the people at fault for that are the council and their legal team. Otherwise the judge would have dismissed it all.

I'm not sure myself, but I very much doubt they've spent the whole time persuing action in a speedy manor,I've just come up with a fucking wicked idea, that might/might not work in this case, but would still help.... if a contracter is contracted to do building works without planning permission (and checking to make sure it's legit), then they should be forced to cover any deconstruction costs.... or something like that.

It does actually set a dangerous precedant on planning lawand whether or not it can be enforced. In the UK our law is based on cases, so if a judge says someone is legally allowed to something, anyone else can cite this as a precedent and be allowed to do it too.

And I never said they were.But of the stories on that page you linked to, two are about the Dale Farm camp so you have to refer to them as travellers, two are about plans in other countries which are actually condemning the actions taken against travellers, one is about a criminal gang of travellers who took driving tests for other travellers, how else are you going to report that story without referring to travellers? The one about Tessa Jowell is a story about how a group of travellers moved onto a site without planning permission.

Bit of a late response...It is not that I am indifferent to this, or any other news story. It's just this story tends to bring out strong opinions in people you might not expect to hear them from.

No, if you pay tax at all, you're all equal, doesn't matter how much you earn in ratio to what you pay because the system is whatever the system is.It's those who aren't paying anything that you can look down on, however, if you want to have degrees of rightous indignation, the more you pay into the system (in ratio to work done), the more you can look down on them.
