challenge idea

# Help ME Cus You Love Me
Ello all, I have recently acquired a nice shiny
Windows XP Pro disc and am running 98 SE.
Can I just install XP Pro OVER 98 SE with all my App's and stuff with no hassle or am i gonna have to format and do it like that?
Please help, as i'm mildly stupid when it comes to OS's and shit.
Making maps is more my thing :)
All replies much appreciated

# Format
That bad boy, installing over an OS is never a good idea for stability. And go for NTFS if you do.
(, Mon 7 Oct 2002, 14:58, archived)
# don't
go for ntfs unless you need the security
(, Mon 7 Oct 2002, 15:12, archived)
# Yo!
You can only do an upgrade to XP if the version of XP you got is an upgrade version. I always reinstall from scratch when it comes to OSs anyways - saves a lot of headaches in the longrun.

Hope that helps!
(, Mon 7 Oct 2002, 14:59, archived)
# If
the cd is bootable you should be able to do either - but yep, it's a darn good idea to format and start again.

# wellll,
you will need to format the hard drive before you install xp, also you should be aware that not all pcs can take xp, they just roll over and die, so it would be worth saving everything onto a cd if you can. if not floppies will do. ( although you will need a lot of them)

I know it works installing XP alongside Win2000 - not sure about 98. If so, it is a safe option.

# Should be able to...
...as long as you've got a partitioning fingy. If you wanna share files between the two, you need to not choose NTFS also.
personally I'd just use 2000 anyways
(, Mon 7 Oct 2002, 15:07, archived)
# you don't need special partitioning software
as XP and Win200 do the partitioning bit for you. But I don't know if it works with 98 as well.
(, Mon 7 Oct 2002, 15:23, archived)
# I have 98 and xp on this machine with no partition
...windows98 and xp both use same folder (x:\windows) so make sure that, if you install both, to change one of the directorys to, say, windows2.

Prob better to just partition -to be safe- if you want both...
