Look, I get that some people are dealt a poor psychological hand in life. You don't get to decide how your brain is wired, or what you find appealing. But you absolutely can make the decision on whether or not you act on those urges. I can only hope that those close to you do not suffer due to the choices you make.

Why did Dyson make this, and what is it for?

The 1% is the original airblade hand drier. Not the new ones that just blast all the water on your shoes and floor.
( , Sat 3 Jun 2023, 17:07, Reply)

made exclusively for stupid cunts.
Literally every joint in their over-designed vacuum cleaners is a point of failure. You can't lift them without the part you're holding separating from the rest, and when it hits the floor (or the bottom of the stairs) it disintegrates like lego.
Just one whiff of ash in the filters and the motor will never work properly ever again.
Utterly useless technology. Just buy a Henry, or if that's not hardcore enough, get a pair of ear protectors and a Vax.
Their air purifying headphones are viral superspreaders. You should only use them if you are a very low level supervillain.
You'd have to be suicidal to even test drive a fucking Dyson CAR. Jesus fucking Christ.

We immediately took it apart and found the fan inside it.
Another mate of mine ended up taking quite senior HR post there. They quit after 6 months or so - with no other job to go to - because the culture in the place was so toxic.
Dyson is such fucking bullshit.
( , Sat 3 Jun 2023, 19:31, Reply)

I've got our old one in my garage and it seems to keep going forever. That said, after we "upgraded" to one where the hose wore out every year and was stupid money to replace, I was finally done with Dyson when it picked up a 2p piece which then got stuck halfway up the pipe. Why on earth would someone design an air path that got smaller?
( , Sat 3 Jun 2023, 20:33, Reply)

had it about 2 and half years, I reckon he had it for at least 3.. one of the better models. easier than any vacuum cleaner ive used. really good suction for cordless, especially on carpets. quick and easy emptying. hardly gets blocked. to me it does seem a bit top heavy and fragile, so I'm careful where I stand it. but other than that it seems a great vacuum. cant really talk about the value as I didn't pay, but probably overpriced to buggery if you look at all else they flog. but cordless beats having to plug in something and drag it around anyday of the week, and its a pretty powerful cordless. I reckon I vacuum the house twice as fast
( , Mon 5 Jun 2023, 23:14, Reply)

After all, they'd been using it for years before Dyson "invented" it.
( , Sun 4 Jun 2023, 2:39, Reply)

My folks decided to invest in a fancy new vacuum cleaner and ended up opting for a Miele Blizzard. It's the most miserable pile of shittybollocks to masquerade as a hoover that I've ever had the mispleasure of experiencing.
Its suction power barely exceeds half-hearted and the fucking thing overheats every 5 minutes, entering a filter self-cleaning mode that sounds like the cursed plastic bastard is eating itself from the inside out before having another go for a minute or two before shutting down completely lest it burst into flames.
It turns out that the fucking shitty filter needs replaced more frequently than a fucking shitty bag would, because cleaning the fucking shitty thing under the tap makes absolutely zero fucking shitty difference.
I've only used the bastarding thing three or four times and I fucking hate it.
By contrast, my Miele C3 is an absolute dream.
( , Sun 4 Jun 2023, 10:52, Reply)

But when I realised the filter was washable it was just a matter of giving it a good wash with washing up liquid, working it well into the filter so the dirt would then rinse out. The same works on Dyson filters.
( , Sun 4 Jun 2023, 18:18, Reply)

heavy hard to clean. hard to use. over heat
Henry is the best. simple vertical stack design. reliable. light. easy to use. plus it has a nice face
( , Sun 4 Jun 2023, 12:29, Reply)

I used to repair them. Utterly pointless,. Overpriced plastic shit. The battery fail rate on their cordless stuff is criminal.

then you follow an online tutorial at how to remove the filters, motors and possibly replace the metal endcaps* to end up with cheap, reasonable quality headphones with a 50hr battery life.

The last track is a gentle haunting entry to the work: youtu.be/woSZMkzFgyk
But the power when they al go for it in the fractions of a tone harmony is more challenging, but worth it.

Spent the better part of these last two evenings trying to recreate Nicholas Britell's monumental "Andante Risoluto" (from the Succession season 4 soundtrack). For no particular reason other than trying to see if I could do it, and to find out that makes this amazing track 'tick'. A work in progress, as ususal, but I think I’m coming really close to the original, really happy with the results so far!

Hammer-ons and pull-offs might be tricky too.
I like how he's gone about it and it illustrates a point.
( , Thu 1 Jun 2023, 20:32, Reply)

if he'd used a cleaner signal path because that amp/mic setup is adding a fucktonne of distortion which is going to diminish all but the least subtle differences. Also you can see him playing the parts differently according to body type, it's especially prominent when he uses the 2x4 body compared to the 'caster.
The air guitar test isn't great because the two benches he bolts it to are not bolted to the control guitar... I think the sound is resonating through those benches.
To make the tests fairer I think he should have a robot doing the strumming, and break out the oscilloscopes and spectrographs to do some slightly more objective comparisons.

but Im too attached to the old girl to get another, and too lazy to replace them
( , Thu 1 Jun 2023, 23:20, Reply)

before I played guitar I thought the way it sounded was how you play it
that's mostly true
( , Fri 2 Jun 2023, 9:38, Reply)

He is using a slide for starters so the neck is removed from the equation. Sustain is totally changed.
I have 3 electrics and they each sound differently acoustically and that difference is the difference you hear when plugged in. So that's all you need to know.
And there's more! How the guitar feels affects how you play, the build of the guitar changes how it feels to bend strings, fckn countless things all of which change tone.
I call bullshit, clickbaitery and fakism
( , Fri 2 Jun 2023, 10:01, Reply)

But as I said, put literally any signal through that path and it will share timbral characteristics *by design*. A direct input (with no distortion, no added noise, no filters or signal processing) into a computer equipped with an oscilloscope and spectrograph would reveal so much more information.

"For their experiments, the researchers followed the ants with a GPS device. This allowed them to track the ants on their way to the saltpan and back home"
"However, we also observed an unexpectedly high mortality rate. About 20 percent of foraging ants do not find their way back home after extremely long runs"
Interesting though, seems they rely more on visual acuity than I'd guess, rather than following chem trails. Suggests some more complex cognition in pattern recognition and memory
( , Thu 1 Jun 2023, 12:01, Reply)

The researchers carried the GPS device to record the ants' path (because ants are just too lazy)

they glue microtrackers on other insects, though even if its just trudging over them they might be interfering given their contention the wee buggers are good at seeing. seems to be a lot of research about em, I counted a dozen recent papers on their navigation alone
