it always catches me off guard at how people can make such shit videos. Multiple repetitions, mistakes that should have just been reshot, etc etc.

step 2, get a load of fruit
step 3, get a big bucket and sterilise it
step 4, blanche some fuit
step 5, put the fruit, a couple of Kg sugar, and some wine yeast into the bucket, seal and put one of those airlock bubblers on it
step 5, when the bubbling has nearly stopped add some more sugar, repeat until no bubbling even with sugar
step 6, wait until it gets clear then put into bottles and put those in the freezer
step 7, when really frozen take the lids off and let the first liquid run out until there is just ice left in the bottle
step 8, enjoy your redneck vodka that cost almost nothing except a bit of time.
Now you don't have to watch the video

the problem is that a lot of the shit things like methanol, esters, alhehydes also get concentrated, which can lead to blinding headaches or worse. But it's cheaper than heat distilling, you just need a freezer or leave it outside if you live somewhere snowy.
( , Sun 16 Feb 2025, 22:23, Reply)

it's redneck vodka. It's shit, but it does the job.
You can do proper distillation (throwing away the first bit) if you like, and you'll get a much better result. If you then filter it through charcoal, you'll get a much smoother result.
Of course, you could just buy some cheap vodka and filter it through charcoal a few times...

Control by temperature at the point where the vapour exits the column, keep it close to 78oC.
(I was going to make a fractionating column with marbles until I decided my liver had had enough punishment).
Remove 1st and last 5% of distillate.

A friend in my teens bought some white converse baseball boots and dyed them purple.
They dyed his feet purple after he wore them for a day.
The dye wouldn't wash off and he had bright purple feet for weeks.

Shed of the Year 2025 is officially open for entries!
This marks our 19th year of celebrating the quirkiest, most creative, and downright brilliant sheds across the land.
Last year's winner, Wayne had already entered 3 very different sheds over the years, before Wrinkly, Rusty and Retro won, so take that, Arthur "Two Sheds" Jackson.
This year we are celebrating Eco Havens, which should demonstrate use of sustainable techniques and materials, as well as the ways it goes above and beyond to support our Bee (and other insect) friends
Given that many b3tans are now at a certain age, I’m hoping to see more entries that lean into the comforts of life: cosy cabins for napping, retro gaming sheds packed with old consoles and CRT TVs, and of course, the perennial favourite—the "Normal Garden Shed". You know the one: it looks like a humble shed for storing your lawnmower, but hidden behind a false wall or under a trapdoor lies a secret pub shed, complete with a tiny bar, mismatched stools, and a fridge full of questionable lagers. Come on, B3ta—shine like the shed-building legends you are!
I look forward to seeing your sheds
Thanks for your support over the years

He needs to do something with that roof. That feels like wasted space. You must be able to grow something up there.
Otherwise though, it actually seems like quite a good idea. Wonder if it's noisy when it rains?
( , Wed 12 Feb 2025, 13:27, Reply)

I'd make a rooftop dining area or like you say, grow more plants. I reckon a dining area so it felt like you were having dinner in the clouds/stars.
I just really liked the idea of always being able to go outside to have dinner amongst tropical plants, even if it's raining. Especially if it's raining.
I reckon it would pair well with solar power and heat pumps. You could probably lower your electric and gas bills to practically zero. I'd also put in some way to make power from that heat gradient.
( , Wed 12 Feb 2025, 16:41, Reply)

If you want to have dinner under glass surrounded by plants, it's probably easier and cheaper to just get a conservatory.

But I was planning on building one pretty much on the Welsh border, so that also counts for the sort of place you don't want to experience the actual weather.

to tell the difference between inappropriate doomscrolling anxiety and rational fear at the moment.
I can't think of anyone who is optimistic about the future, though that's probably the problem. Should be selling people on a Buckminster Fuller green future, rather than thinking that fear will lead to positive action.
Well played getting the conspiracy theorists to vote for Project 2025 billionaires, though. Nice bit of satire, there.

Speaking as a transplant from the cold north, grits are served with everything, but only if you order that.
Side note: The word Grits is actually from Old English, meaning "Coarsely ground." Grytt.

Seems like revisiting old diaries is suddenly a bit of a thing, but I swear I didn't know this at the time when I started on this book.
I found my old diaries from 40 years ago and they were ridiculous, all I did was complain about being bored, try and find pictures of Samantha Fox to wank off to, and fail miserably to copy ZX Spectrum games from mates on my crap tape recorder. There is a fair bit of 1984/85 fourteen year-old me Spectrum talk, maps, pokes, Crash! magazine etc and even my laughable attempt at starting a software house and writing a game. So if that's up your Banyan Tree then give it a go - Kindle version is on offer for the next couple of weeks

( , Tue 11 Feb 2025, 10:47, Reply)

Had the impression that there will exist bigger things that do the job better. That said they probably have some uses, especially if they could be used, easily detached and recovered.
( , Tue 11 Feb 2025, 11:11, Reply)

From half to a few grand and upward. More power and battery life.
But I gather from divers that have tried them, it's generally a lot less hassle to just swim where you want to go.

I think if they're not in widespread use in commercial diving or the military, it suggests they're not actually that useful.
