the thing weighted a ton with the turret in and so couldn't carry the same amount of fuel plus forward guns plus ammunition. The plan was for the plane to get under the bombers and shoot up.
Trouble was, when it was conceived, the only threat to the UK was the bombers - the fighter escort simply didn't have the range to come from Germany.
It was only after it had been put into production that Adolf had been an utter cad and occupied France so the bombers had fighter escort which were more than a match for the poor Defiants.
The bastard.

I think it was on the SE5a to fight balloons (they being higher up than the maximum altitude it could reach). The gun was fixed on a track that tilted it back 90° in order to reload the drum as standard and they did try to fire it straight up in the reload position to get the extra height.
The problem was, the gun jammed a lot when fired that way plus the ammo was incendiary - against the rules to use them in normal dogfights (yes, there were rules!) The pilot needed to be carrying special balloon mission documents in case of capture by the enemy. If they got caught without them, they'd be executed rather than be taken prisoner
By WW2 I think two-seaters were much more powerful and fighters much more suited to shooting bombers (which had better blind spot protection)
( , Sat 2 Dec 2017, 22:21, Reply)

the incendiary bullets did practically no damage to the balloons, just whizzing straight through the fabric.
It was the explosive rounds that really lit the torch, so to speak.

A few years ago, Sarah affixed a mini-banner to the bottom of a fence around a basketball pitch - a hang-out for young men, in a part of South London notorious for gang violence.
On it was stitched a quotation from the film director, Martin Scorsese: "It seems to me that any sensible person must see that violence does not change the world, and if it does, then only temporarily."
She hoped the kids would notice it, find it surprising and understand that someone cared about them.'

( , Fri 1 Dec 2017, 15:31, Reply)

Neither of those were tragedies. They were the direct result of human instigated violence. Grenfell doesn't fit into that pocket, it was a horrific accident (made worse by hubris sure) not something that a person instigated on purpose.
( , Fri 1 Dec 2017, 15:44, Reply)

"tragedy
Noun
An event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural catastrophe."
Also accident?
The Whirlpool fridge freezer that probably started it are part of a massive consumer safety scandal. whirlpool are refusing to do a recall on them despite causing loads of fires.
Combine that with the flammable cladding that was put on just so people in the area with much better housing didn't have to look at an eye sore and you've got a bit of blame to sling around.
Also you forgot to point out where I mocked it.
( , Fri 1 Dec 2017, 16:00, Reply)

I don't see murder as an tragedy. I see it as the actions of an evil murderous shit. It's a terrible loss of life, but it wasn't an accident borne of hundreds of layers of mistakes, it is a distinct evil action attributable back to an individual.
Grenfell was a tragedy.

... such as the ones that many other EU member states including Germany currently have quite successfully and legally.
Interesting detailed discussion on those here: www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/sam-fowles/nationalisation-is-not-ag_b_8231336.html - the writer says nationalisation is specifically protected by Art. 345 of the TFEU: "The Treaties shall in no way prejudice the rules in Member States (MS) governing the system of property ownership," and sets out the confusion arising with possible conflict between that and Art. 106.
This is not the only thing I've read flatly denying that Corbyn's nationalisation plan relies on leaving the EU.
More broadly, if we can just go ahead and set fire to everything (as currently) I'm fairly sure we could, instead, just go ahead and not set fire to everything but still nationalise a bunch of industries. In fact, that would be my preferred plan. YM, obviously, MV.
