Broadband - some advice/guidance please
My mother-in-law is still paying AOL for the joy of dial-up. The problem being that she was once told that broadband was not available in her area - this was about 6 years ago). I have shown her that there are about 8 wireless networks (all locked) that my laptop can see from her kitchen, so she is coming around to the idead that broadband is an option - the question is which one. Something simple, reliable and relatively cheap.

Answers on a postcard please

Have a laugh at my expense ....
.
Sometimes, I'm an idiot. Okay, a lot of the time, I'm an idiot. I have finally, after 15 years in the same house, got round to buying house numbers so people can find us a bit easier.

Rather than make nasty holes in the door surround, eedjit here decides to glue them in place. With Super Glue. (You can see what's coming, can't you?) I very nearly managed to stick my fingers to the door surround. Thankfully I realised what was happening just in time to pull my fingers away, but wasn't finished quite yet. I was determined to stick the numbers on, and I was trying to hold them still without getting my fingers stuck to the bloody things. All I succeeded in doing was glueing my thumb to my pinkie.

When I let go of the numbers, they began a slow side towards ground level. Clearly the UPVC door surround isn't receptive to Super Glue.

I soaked my stuck-together fingers in soapy water, got them separated and dug out the drill. Drilled some little holes and screwed the damn numbers on, like I should've done in the first place. I currently have a little bit of solid Super Glue under the nail on my pinkie, and a patch of dried glue on the pad of my thumb. Which I am picking off, millimetre by millimetre.

Really, I shouldn't be left in the house without a responsible adult. It's a good job the kids will be home soon, to keep me out of trouble.

A little help
I'm really not happy in my new job. I've just found a job at the college next door for a senior academic librarian. Now regardless of my rantings I loved being a librarian and I do miss it. But it's less money. So the jobs stack up as follows:

CURRENT JOB: Exams Coordinator at Canterbury College.

WAGE: 18,350 a year, 37 hours a week

PROS: Good money, cosy office.

CONS: Boring work, office is full of arseholes.

LIBRARY JOB: Art College next door

WAGE: 17,550 a year, 33 hours a week

PROS: Fewer hours, back doing something I enjoy

CONS: Less money, probably won't reflect well if I'm trying to get out of my current job after 2 months.

Ok b3tans, I need you to be careers advisors.

Fund raising
OK, long story short I'm going to South Africa with an organisation called The Niall Mellon Township Trust in March 2009. It pretty much involves building houses for people living in shanty towns at the side of the road.

Anyway I have to raise €5000 for this and at the moment I'm having a spot of bother raising all the cash. Dont worry, this isn't a yarn to try get people to donate money (although you are free to if you so wish), I am just wondering if anyone here has ever done any substantial fundraising for charity and if they have any ideas I could try. So far I've held a charity gig which raised just over €500 and I'm holding a table quiz with my work colleges next week which should also help. So, can anyone help me out with any other ideas for fundraising??

A random remembering of an incident from a while back
We have a friend that just happens to be a Jewish American from New York. A slightly crap Jew, admittedly, since she eats bacon and pork, celebrates Christmas and believes in an afterlife, but Jewish nonetheless.

A while back now, myself, the Sweary One, and our friend went out for a meal, rounded off with a couple of quiet drinks in one of our favoured locals. Once we entered the pub, it quickly became apparent from the conversation going on amongst a large group of middle aged women that they had all been to the ‘Singalonga Sound of Music’ screening at a cinema in town. This was further evidenced by them bursting into random renditions of ‘Do Re Me’ and ‘Favourite Things’ amongst others as the evening wore on.

However, on opening the door to the pub they were in full swing with ‘So Long, Farewell’, and we entered just as they got to the bit in the song that goes ‘Adieu, adieu’… which, when sang in a northern brogue accompanied by a few too many white wines sounds exactly like, ‘A Jew, a Jew’…

Completely random but creased me up at the time.

Unnecessary leading zeros
Does anyone share my irritation with unnecessary leading zeros? Sure, they are sometimes necessary when inputting data, but a good example of their unnecessary use is on petrol station signs - now fuel has dropped back to under £1 per litre some signs are showing, for example, 094.9 - what is wrong with 94.9? Before petrol broke the £1 barrier you never saw the price displayed in this way.

Also, I've noticed a tendency in recent years for people to *hand* write dates with unnecessary leading zeros - eg 04/09/08 instead of 4/9/08 - or as I prefer 4/9/8.

Anyone want to launch a campaign with me?

Christmas List
Morning all. I'm bored at work and have exhausted Gamecentral, the BBC website and the Times website. So I thought I'd drop off my Christmas wishlist while I'm here, it's just I'd rather you got me something I actually wanted for Christmas I hope you understand. You can arrange amongst yourself who gets me what...

1) Fender Standard Telecaster (Arctic White) £295
2) Apple iPod Classic (160GB) £250
3) LaCie 500GB 7200RPM USB2 8MB £50
4) Curb Your Enthusiasm (Complete Series) £50
5) Seinfeld (Complete Series) £100
6) Xbox 360 Arcade (to replace my last one which suffered graphic chip meltage) £130
7) Fallout 3 £40

Anything else on top of the above would be HUGELY appreaciated.

Thanks in advance..

how do you tell your best mate
that you think her boyfriend is a weiner?

my friend evie has been "going out" with this guy for about 6 months.

they see each other about once a fortnight; he never texts or calls her, and she always initiates contact/makes all the plans. she is gorgeous and he looks like a freckled pear drop on legs. plus, it's been 6 months , and they have not had sex. not only that, but not even close. nada. zip. the one time they tried, he couldn't get it up. he always makes excuses to go home alone at the end of the night.

yet there she is, turning down other eligible guys, telling us all that he is her soulmate, making plans with him for months in the future...

i've said nothing to date, because i am well aware that it is none of my business, but listening to her is really starting to depress me now! it has made me think that it is really difficult when you hate your friends' partners, and i wondered if anyone else had any tips or anything more amusing to relate??

What is it about stout?
Over the course of last night, from about 6:00 until about 11:00, I had three beers and two bottles of Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout.

This morning my insides are doing things best described by Pooflake in some of his more frightening stories.

Why the hell does stout do this to me?

No warning
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7706033.stm

Isn't giving a warning to a suicide bomber ready to blow himself up* a bit stupid? Surely it'd just be an invitation to blow himself up?

*I know he wasn't but the police believed he was.

/is angry again and really fucking hot in the office

*grumble*

Goodbye from Che Grimsdale
Che's workplace blocked b3ta long ago but now that Barnsey has gone down he thinks he won't be able to post for a while. He has decided to take an enforced holiday from b3ta for a bit and maybe even try to get that novel written....

Anyway, he's asked me to send on his best wishes, hugs and kittens to everyone and of course he'll see a load of us at the York bash in January!

I've seen the videos.

Bugger.

EDIT: Did anyone else notice the loke on our table in the second pub, and how much he looked like Smug Bastard?

A quick question on behalf of another b3tan...
barnsey.org has gone down or at least been blocked by another work place, so does anyone have any of the other links to connect to b3ta on the fly?

The Great Halloween Username Heist of '08...

On Halloween the world was fun
With ‘tricks’ and ‘treats’ dealt by the ton
I thought I’d join in with the game…
And some cunt stole my username

It’s sad how some twats get their kicks
By turning into thieving dicks
Cos of my name I was quite fond
It’s ok to be called ‘gay pond’

It seems I’m not the only one
To find their B3taname has gone
So if I must, I’ll look real hard
But give it back, you cack spacktard!

Or now perhaps I’ll take this chance
On one of my poetic rants
And change the name of which I’m famed
To one of which I’m less ashamed

So…

Have fun with ‘Pooflake’ if you dare
And keep the name ‘cos I don’t care
It’s just a word as you will see…
You’ll NEVER be the REAL me…

Username protection
For anyone who had their username hijacked over the hallowe'en period (me included), I added a suggestion to Bugs and Feature Requests.

www.b3ta.com/questions/bugs_and_feature_requests/post292966

Most people got their usernames back, but I know of at least a couple who didn't. Your comments and clicks on the post above might stop this happening in the future.

Thanks.

Does anyone
NOT want me to post the pics of them from the bash last night?

Let me know if so.

Otherwise I shall get them all uploaded and post the link somewhere around here :)

EDIT: pics now uploaded to the pool! here

Good morning.

I had a lie in this morning instead of getting up at stooopid 0'clock to go to the gym.

Left the Manchester bash at 7.30pm last night and I have a sneaking suspicion that much fun will have been had in my absence.

Again everyone seemed like a lovely bunch and one or two had that B3ta naughty twinkle in their eyes. I'm naming no names.
