This is a normal post I know snow days are becoming rarer, but it always amused me how totally unprepared england seemed to be whenever it snowed
and most years you'd get one or two days at least. Everything shuts down. EDs were jampacked with injuries, you get boneheads like the above that don't seem to have heard about snow tires, chains and often antifreeze. but it stretches to things like building design. I was in a hotel in plymouth my company put me up in who on the coldest day of the year had no hot water because the pipes had frozen

i've just wasted a good hour on google maps. After the plymouth debacle, I had to give some presentation on the way back but i'm fucked if I can remember the name of the place, or even whether it was devon or somerset. I just remember getting off the train, with light snow falling, and discovering the actual town was in the distance on the other side of a small valley with open fields. It was a cute market town, medium to small sized. no luck so far

Also why so few people use chains; we just don't need them often enough to buy them, much less faff around putting them on.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've just had an idea for a 12V heater that I can put over my air vents to clear the windscreen faster. For some reason my car ices up on the inside too.

But given that it does snow, it’s that failure to learn any sort of lessons like it’s stupid to drive in snow without em. I had a fair few snow days living in London, which is a fair walk south of Berwick. I lived with nurses, and casualty was full of geniuses who thought it was a splendid notion to ride their bike to work through this strange and unknowable white substance in the roads

I rode in today but it took a very long time what with the constant getting off and pushing when it was too icy. I was frankly astonished at the number of people on skinny tyres who went roaring past at speed though. I've spent long enough in surgery not to want to come off my bicycle again, thank you very much.

Those tyre socks you get at Halfords are the bollox. Put them on my VW Up! last time it snowed properly in the midlands and was driving round stuck 4x4s. They are honestly brilliant and well worth the money to keep around, and they're not destructive to the road or driveways either.

Not a long-term solution, but handy for getting caught out. Lucky to get them to last a week though, and don't leave them on if you get to clear tarmac or they'll be torn up before you know it.
