Most of these seem WAY over the top.

I remember watching this for the first time and thinking "very impressive, but why??" I mean, I understand that permits/logisitics etc, for some shots would be difficult, but really? this sort of cg is *expensive*... although I guess less expensive than the alternative

I was amazed at the amount of manipulation that went into the film Zodiac. Some of it so subtle but that's when it works best I think.

Either way Zodiac is fucking brilliant.
( , Wed 15 Aug 2012, 14:12, Reply)

It's probably changed massively since.
But I was most impressed with the fact that most of the time I had absolutely no idea I was watching any kind of CGI. Especially the alterations to the buildings. So subtle and effective.
( , Wed 15 Aug 2012, 14:21, Reply)

At no point did I spot a single CGI shot in the whole film.
Also I've just seen this on reddit

I'm still blown over by Davy Jones from POTC though. Organic creatures seem to be the most difficult to do convincingly, and my ILM got that near perfect. images.usatoday.com/life/_photos/2006/07/17/pirates-topper.jpg
Just the movement, the lighting... incredible.

Yes that's one of my favourite CGI creations, I was amazed when I discovered it was a complete CGI effect.

most of this is just comping... using real photographic elements comped together.
CGI is normal used to describe an added element that is entirely computer generated...
there for comping a video of someones arm onto their body, is very different from generating A CGI arm...
semantics... and I'm normally anti-semantics.
( , Wed 15 Aug 2012, 14:50, Reply)

but shirley you're comping computer generated scenes? e.g. the live action scene and (potentially) a completely computer generated scene?
( , Wed 15 Aug 2012, 18:31, Reply)

most of these are video element comps... theres some cgi, and even some still images, but most of it is still film comping

( , Wed 15 Aug 2012, 12:08, Reply)

look like they're aligning their left feet *very* carefully with something on the floor just beforehand, so I'm guessing that they've got some sort of hinged rod concealed in their left trouser legs that engages with a hook or similar and locks in place when they lower themselves to the correct angle. I've seen yogis who use a similar gimmick to 'levitate'.

I'm certainly veering towards the "that's very sick, and thus funny" even though I know it's not the 'right' answer. But I'm comfortable enough to laugh at just about anything. That cartoon, Electric Retard was a case in point (not sure it exists any more cos no-one would host it).
My girlfriend's younger cousin posted about this site yesterday on her FB feed and was quite upset (her mum's got leukemia). So, whilst I see, appreciate and enjoy witnessing how far people are willing to push a 'joke' I can see that other people aren't willing to cross those boundaries.

They really have to do something special with this to raise the bar. Other games have come in to take the crown. Go back and play GTA IV. Poor car controls, stiff shooting, a bloke that CONSTANTLY rings you and wants to go bowling (?!?!).
I'm actually wondering whether to not bother with GTA V, but I'll probably get sucked in all over again.
