If you tell me you do the anim in flash and export it to a gif. Do you think I'll be able to compete?

The optimisation is too good for Flash
Flash sucks for exporting to a gif. If I do things in Flash then I first publish as an image sequence then import-folder-as-frames and optimise in Image Ready. It's a bit laborious, but it's the only way to get a decent gif from a Flash animation, I find.

aye imageready is the business for optimerisation
i tend to use corel rave rather than flash as it seems to be better for importing photoshop files

Fireworks is my weapon of choice for animated giffery
I only use ImageReady for converting video files into .gifs

or you can just download a copy of Magic swf2gif
which converts swfs to gif (obviously), perfectly!... then its just a case of loading the gif in imagereadybrek and cropping/optimising to taste.
