I've found hundreds of songs that were hits in Austrialia but did nothing in the UK. Turns out they're mostly rubbish.

The idea was to find new (old) pop music. Crate digging with code.
Australia was chosen because of the tweet that inspired it.

from there (and obviously other places) and asked for certain records (yes those round things) and it seemed to catch on more around the mid to late 80's when some radio stations could be picked up online and then of course the good old Stock Aitkin and Waterman machine started with Kylie and anyone else who had an Australian accent. Imports were big business back then as you could buy a record for about £1.50 and sell it for £7 or £8 easily as DJ's were always hungry for new stuff.

This podcast covers the 100% hits compilations from a certain record label. There is a patreon show that covered the competing one

They also did the joke that a lot of the singles only got No. 1 in Australia and Hungary. Back in the old days due to import restrictions local stars ended up doing their own versions of overseas songs.

because if Legal Eagle is right and Trump can't get a firm to stump up the full amount while he appeals, then he's liable for the amount in full right away. And as is pointed out Trump's assets are very visible and easy to find - they have his fucking name all over them. God I'd love to be the bailiff firm that got that gig!!!!

but having to pay all that cash immediately is going to be a problem for his cashflow AND if he can't then other trail about him misrepresenting his wealth will be incredibly hard to fight (you said you had all that cash to hand, mister Trump).
It also bodes ill for his other legal issues as he just can't get decent legal representation now - he won't take advice and he doesn't pay his bills.
I think it's likely to be cumulative.

it's pretty much all superpac money, which will ramp up for Trump and Biden once (or "if" if you're the optimistic sort) they're confirmed as candidates, to levels that will make this settlement miniscule by comparison

but there are limits on what you can do with donations and while Trump can get away with a lot, $85m in such a high-profile move would be very risky. A lot of his funds come in small donations so seeing all that go to E Jean Carrol could end up hurting him.
I don't know. We will find out won't we?

While he appeals he has to pay interest on the awarded amount so, assuming the appeal is ultimately unsuccessful, the longer he drags it out the more he has to pay.

it stayed in a shed, but also came into their house, and even, i shit you not, used to RIDE THEIR DOG (a collie) to the shops. apparently the collie was down with the crowness. when it was finally fit enough to fuck off it duly did so. and that was it, they never saw it again.
except for one time. two years later it sat in a tree in the garden with its mate. eventually it flew down from the tree, came into the house, said hello to my aunt and her dog, ate some food, watched tv, and then, flew back to its mate that had clearly no desire to participate in this apparent madness.
it sat in the tree with its mate for a bit, cawed and fucked about and then buggered off.
to quote my great aunt "Crowy just came back to show off his mate, to let us know he was okay, and to say thanks"
and she never saw 'Crowy' again. and i think that is pretty fucking amazing and wonderful. my great aunt was lovely.
she also once found a message in a bottle. when she opened the bottle message simply read 'piss off'.
(, Thu 1 Feb 2024, 19:08, Reply)
apparently this happens rather regularly. it was in my backyard during lockdown, and the dogs were going nuts, so I shepherded it around the side of the house where it could stay in peace, and fed it mince until it was strong enough to flap. It hung around the general vicinity of the house for two years after that even though I wasn't feeding it, found a mate, until I found a flat runover magpie on the street.
(, Thu 1 Feb 2024, 21:03, Reply)

Crazy crows. Mine elected to remain relatively wild. About a year ago they moved, and my crow, Floyd, came by and made what appeared to be his way of telling me. They went across a small canyon where there are other crows. But he continues to stay in touch. He drops by and hangs out with me, then off he goes for another few weeks. I live for this kind of stuff.

though her career seems to have survived the bump.
Graham Linehan's not reasonable in any way, though. He's attacked people on his own "side" (for want of a better term) because they've questioned his approach of calling everyone a paedo, and seems happy to embrace any old fash who agrees with him, even ones who openly call themselves anti-feminist. Twitter has sent him quite mad.
(, Tue 30 Jan 2024, 14:52, Reply)
but I caught him guesting on a couple of recent podcasts, and he sounded reasonable and reflective, not saying anything I thought was off the deep end or pushing some antiwoke barrow. If he was there's actually money to be made there, but he seems to be an honest actor.
He's one of the best comedy writers of recent decades who sounds like he still wants to work but is persona non grata. I'm less fussed if he's thin-skinned on the cesspit that is twitter and not gandhi-like as the rest of us.
(, Tue 30 Jan 2024, 22:14, Reply)
but he is a case study for internet radicalisation, and I think being used by people who do profit from making the trans issue into angry culture wars noise. Thin-skinned would be telling people to fuck off, not embracing many of the people and ideas he has. I'm genuinely curious if he'll be supporting Trump before the year is out.
But yeah, he was a great writer, though hasn't done much of note since Twitter appeared in his life.
(, Tue 30 Jan 2024, 23:08, Reply)
but the opposite of bigotry and phobia is tolerance and understanding, it's not piling in on perceived culture war opponents on social media, which is how many on the left these days think is how to express their values. That's what drives people in the middle to extremes and having strange bedfellows, and linehams not in politics, he's just a middle-aged bloke with an opinion, as flawed as the rest of us.
(, Wed 31 Jan 2024, 1:07, Reply)
but also felt strongly about a divisive issue that was at the point of convergence of people who felt as if they were personally under attack AND a lot of really fucking unsavory people... I'd hold back from rolling up my sleeves for a massive twitter spat.
I really would.
If I really felt that womens' rights were under attack from the trans lobbby (which I don't, for the record - but I can't be arsed getting into it herre) then I'd probably think about how I could use my profile to support that cause in such a way that I could reasonably make my point while not destroying my own career and public profile. Go on podcasts, youtube channels, do a standup routine... whatever. I'd engage with people who disagree with me on a forum where I could maybe have a positive impact on behalf of the people I feel are in need of support. If I thought I was doing more harm than good I'd stop, and that's where I can't understand Linehan's position.
I don't think it's his opinions so much as his attacking people online while being incredibly sensitive himself that I find so mad. If you're not able to take the punches don't throw yourself into a massive fight. And if the fight itself is so unedifying it debases all the people and issues involved in it then why fucking do it?
Honestly, I find the whole social media online pile-on thing utterly perplexing whatever side people are on. I can't wait for twitter to implode. I've seen some jaw-dropping stuff on other platforms - especially in newspaper comment sections - but it doesn't seem to become newsworthy in the same way.
I don't know. He seems utterly fucked up but I can't seem to feel much pity for him since he really wanted it.
(, Thu 1 Feb 2024, 12:28, Reply)
just that being unable to handle people disagreeing with them, overreacting to abuse, being intransigent and argumentative, they're all pretty common human failings. that's why there's so many trolls.
I don't know why people get such bees in their bonnet, as if their shit doesn't stink. There aren't many couples that havent had a shouty argument and that's IRL, people a much worse online.
But he's a great writer who cant get work because nobody wants to touch a project with someone who's had an opinion thats seen to be on the wrong side of the trans debate. Woody allen finds more collaborators, and he was a suspected kiddy fiddler, not a bloke getting a bit reactionary as he gets older. If Lineham was against boat people or right to buy, it wouldn't have nearly as big an impact on his career. there's something a bit cultural revolution about the trans debate, you're with us or against us.
(, Fri 2 Feb 2024, 3:37, Reply)
get thrown load of money and sell out arenas despite being on the same side as him.
And he was working on the musical well after he'd become a full-time monomaniac. I suspect publicly attacking Arthur Mathews and Neil Hannon for not wanting to talk about trans issues, and continuing to tweet 18 hours a day when supposed to be working on a West End musical was the bigger problem. You'd soon be sacked for that in any job.
Anyway, he's moved on to the Palestine debate now (backing Israel 100%). That will go well.

I really should be more informed before I start defending him. I try to stay away from twitter. the first I heard about him being in the shit was a podcast of him talking about his experiences, but he likely painted a much more reasonable picture of himself and position as we tend to do
