Just got in from work - I really should go to bed but I have recently discovered that I actually *like* watching the antics of Jack Bauer in 24, after years of being a bauer-denier
What old thing have you recently discovered and thought "why didn't I get into this originally"?

Slowest OT weekend in forever, and I realise it's my candleday!
I just made pretend soup and it was gorgeous.
Anyone about? I've done tons of work and I'm having the rest of Sunday off.

I do like to play a board game from time to time, and this one was new to all of us. I was the zombie player and everybody else was panicking townsfolk. Plenty of alcohol ensured a good time was had by all, even when I ate Father Joseph in the cornfield.
What's the last board game you played?
altQ: In a zombie outbreak, what would be your weapon of choice?

Hi There guys & gals.
The inimitable Pooflake and myself are in dire need of assistance. The Belmers* need a logo!
We were thinking of a belming version of the Rolling Stones' lips logo type thing. If anyone has the arty/tattyshop skills to make such a thing we'd be eternally** grateful.
Q for the look of the thing.
What've you got to look forward to this weekend?
* Laziest, second-least talented band in Christendom
** I say eternally but it may not be actually for eternity as such.

Probably a slightly esoteric question, but anyone got any idea how much (or how little!) one could expect to pay for a session musician in London these days?

Will an HDMI cable that links a Sky HD box to a plasma telly also link a Sony Vaio laptop to the same TV?
Apologies for luddite tendencies.

I'm convinced this can't possibly be true, but they swore that it is so I thought I'd share. Feel free to call bullshit.
This guy they knew had dropped acid at this family festival thing in the Scottish Borders and was convinced there was goblins running about the place. After a few hours his mate noticed he'd vanished. He had a look around the place but he was nowhere to be seen. An hour or so later he got a phone call from his mate, still off his tits but back at home. He whispered down the phone, "I've caught a goblin!" His mate obviously asked him what the fuck he was on about. He said again, "I've caught a goblin. He's locked in the pantry!"
His mate heads round to his, the guy opens the door, eyes virtually spinning in their sockets, and leads him through to the kitchen, opening the pantry door.
There sat a young boy with Downs' Syndrome eating a biscuit.
He's now doing a stretch for kidnap.
I say bullshit, but I laughed my arse off when my mate told me it.

I was minding my own buisness, enjoying a lovely sandwich, when this women starts talking to me. In this time, she told me
- She used to be a "billionare" with a "multi-international", but [some MP, I donno, I didn't ask] over-ordered by £30k on something and how she's complety broke, but she's going to be a "billionare" again, she's going down the HSBC in canary wolf later on to get a loan to start a university.
- She's married to a 26 year old (she's 51) egyption man, last week, she got off the airport and found him on the street and then married him while on holiday, "look, here's a picture if you don't believe me", yup, that was definatly a picture.
- She's "The most politically active person [I'm] ever likely to meet", and how the goverment are trying to brain-wash us, that they tried it in the miner's strike, but these pills stop that, would [you] like some? It'll stop them from getting to you.
- Her son is just finishing doing web design at uni, google and microsoft are in a bidding war for him at the moment.
I ended up telling her that I don't have a phone because they can track you, so I gave her a fake email address.
All I wanted was a sandwich =(

That was my lunch. My brother took me to the pub just now as he was passing and owed me a meal. He had a gorgeous fat steak - I didn't order that because they had no 28-day matured steaks left so in a moment of insanity I ordered a mixed grill, and when it turned up it looked like it came from Pompeii. I am now so far from carbon neutral I expect to be shitting coal later.
The only worse meal I can remember eating was when I was in Transylvania: a small bowl of grey gruel, with a puddle of oil in it, with a cold grey disc of unidentifiable meat sat on top. It was about 40p.
Ever eaten worse?

and they were talking about the Raoul Moat Facebook page and stuff, and apparently some enterprising spark has started printing Raoul t-shirts. He's quoted as saying "If Moat can make a killing, then so can I".
This made me laugh probably more than it should.
I other news, I brushed my teeth this morning and didn't turn the cold tap off during the act, as is customary. How have you stuck two fingers up at the environment recently?

I've been in Glasgow several times and never liked the place, but we have a wedding there on Sat, so we're going from today. Anything exciting you think I could be doing in that city? Have into account that I've already got on my list "drink beer" and "stay in the hotel watching tv if it's raining"
Are you doing anything exciting this weekend?

For the last couple of weeks there's been a lot of "stuff" going on near me including them putting up a wooden pavillion thing near the park.
I've now found what it's all about
www.ifmiltonkeynes.org/festival-programme.html
Milton Keynes is having an international festival, which basically means fireworks tonight, then maybe seeing Rich Hall later in the week.
How is your local area the best in the world?
Or you could think of hilarious subtitles to IF Milton Keynes:

Which got me to thinking about what I'd change given the opportunity and unlimited cash. If you changed your sex, would you change your name completely or just take the gender-appropriate version of your own? And what cosmetic surgery, however drastic, would you have if you could afford it?

Escpecially Foxtrots which seems especially gay.
Today I spent about 15 minutes wondering if the sentence "We have put your order on a euro pallet" should have read "an euro pallet" which follows gramatical rules but sounds worse than saying less people care about the fewer/less debate every day.
Monty I await your imput as you are the only person I can vaguely stand ranting about this kind of thing.
So if you're not Monty, and the chances are high, you can either do your best Monty impression (or anyone else for that matter, go nuts) or you can play the game "who cares" where you say something and we see if anyone cares

I am looking to get a new laptop for work & have trawled through review sites etc to try & work out what make and model I should get. It needs to be fast & capable of running multiple programmes at once. What would you recommend?
Alt Q: what have you wasted money on recently?

Just yesterday I was complaining here about the nonsense of being Doctor in Philosophy even when you've done a science PhD.
I got this from Mark:
"The word "philosophy" comes from the Greek öéëïóïößá (philosophia), which literally means "love of wisdom".[4][5][6]
Therefore, PhD means "Teacher of the Love of Wisdom""
Which is in fact quite beautiful.
Which new interesting things have you recently learnt?

Those of you who're FB friends with me may have noticed that I accidentally started a MASSIVE ROW yesterday, centred around the misappropriation of the word "gay". In the wake of all this I've come to realise that one of my longest-standing friends seems to regard me as little more than a punching bag, and is a man completely incapable of admitting to being wrong, or apologising to anyone. This really winds me up.
What character trait annoys you more than any other?
I was going to ask you for your thoughts on the acceptability of using the word "gay" as a term of vague abuse but that would be like asking the French how they feel about surrender, so the Alt Q. is name something you wish you'd done by now (bungee jumping, lion taming, Olympic hurdling) that you haven't

After 3 nights in a hotel for a training course, I had just about adjusted to the bed enough to only wake briefly in the night once. Now I'm back home and have barely slept thanks to that adjustment.
I don't do well with change, it appears. What was the last change you had difficulty coping with?
altQ: what did you dream about? Mine was a confused jumble where I was a con-artist organising the resistance to a dictatorship.

I'm a relatively new person here.
My wife is at work, and I am at home, about to watch V for Vendetta.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
