Dear Mods, there is a 2 meg pea on the front page. We're not saying it's not funny or worthy of the front page, but what the fuck are the fucking rules on fucking file fucking sizes?
Some of us bend over backward and fuck up our anims to keep them under 400k like you ask, but this and a few other recent things kind of suggest anything goes.
I appreciate you don't want to be nazi-ish with file size monitoring, but if everyone else is doing it, can we too?

WHO LAMINATED THE FAQ?

If image optimisation is a flexible thing please let us know mods. I constantly worry if my animation go just a few bytes over 400k.

I can spare the bandwidth, maybe most others can but some might have a limited bandwidth allowance. But the main point here is what are the rules on optimisation are the gloves off and we who do make animation regularly can we start posting 1 to 2 meg animations too?

I think we all know what that means.

although to be fair if you are browsing on your phone you can just shut your fucking mouth

anyway I thought if you had something that big to post the done thing was to put up a JPEG (or an overly optimised version) with a link to the fucking huge GIF

*shrugs*

I can't say I'v ever seen anything that was over 500k that was any funnier than anything that was under it.
The thing that anoys me the most is (I don't mind any one going 100k over if really needed) when people post 2 megs worth without even trying and it is quite possible to get it below the 400k advice limit

The limit's probably a little meaningless anyway - my computer's a bit ancient and poo but it does grind to a near halt on a Flanbase/ dancing animals/ strike up the band night, when there's about fifteen meg worth of gif animations all trying to simultaneously load and play in the same thread, all of which when taken individually are faq compliant
( ,

but still struggles on a normal night when the big ones are up; my broadband isn't great & significantly limits it

And the people posting in them love them from time to time,
BUT, I must addmit it's easy to recognise them, and I now deploy the hide button, nothing against people doing them or enjoying them, jusy my PC won't cope.
But when you get a single 2 meg gif like ealier today, it interfers with the entire board loading for me, and untill you'v actually managed to load the entire board completely, you have no idea which picture is causing the problem, but by the time you managed to load it, there is no point in hidding it because it has cached and causes no more problems...

No-one can put a price on 1gb of capering gif shenanigans that excite the eye and stir the limbs.

Link for bigger/better works for me, I hated the picture quality on b3ta.com/board/10376229 but seems it was good enough to get the idea across

We've only just gone up to 400k from 250, you can easily get a joke across in that, if it's not HD video enough for you post it on Youtube with a link to a still frame.

Your scant regard for the rules has caused you to go over by 6,543 bytes. As such, my broadband internet experience has been ruined.
I'm going to console myself at web.archive.org and enjoy sites from 1998.

mind you I've never got my head around floating numbers in maths and 3x3.3 recurring equalling 10

cos it's just fractions.
what's insanely annoying is the proof I got shown that 0.999 recurring = 1.
I refuse to believe that. Maybe that's why I'm so shit at calculus.

Your computer counts bytes in powers of two: 1 KiB = 1024 bytes because 1024 = 210.
People (and sneaky HDD makers) count in powers of ten: 1 KB* = 103.
Don't worry about the 0.3... thing, most people have trouble with that. My solution is to just not think too hard about it.
*I don't know why they use a capital k, it flies in the face of normal SI prefixes, but the i in KiB is there so you know which base (2 or 10) you're dealing with.

It started off as "very funny"
then "very geekily funny"
now it's just "geekily funny"
I'm terrified it'll end up as just "factually incorrect"

Best used when a fix has been made, which still could be done by the

there are only guidelines not rules
the repost that got Fp'd wasn't in a new thread, and it's not the first time that a decent image got FP'd even though it had been posted before (In fact on of my FPs was a repost)
the size thing is unfortunate, but again, 400kb is a guideline and if your work is over that you can (and should) post it as a link
edit: to add, i used to be a right prick about filesize and dimensions. i really did nazi up the board. but i've got over it

I think being FP'ed is a big stamp of approval, and if they're going to stamp a big stamp of approval stamp on things that stamped should be not, then stamping of feet, stamping and stamp stamp stamp. 1st class.

I pretty much work on dial up though it's called broadband. Reason as I live in a fairly rural area and I have no guaranteed speed or service and have to share with a whole block of people. Most evenings it chugs.
Keeping file sizes down is just good etiquette anywhere as it's easy and saves storage space and download speeds. If the post is funny or well done then a bit of optimization will not harm it.
