if anyone's interested I turned off 'Shape Dynamics' in the brush settings, and set Opacity Jitter to pen pressure+50% in 'Other Dynamics'

Agrees with ^thisYou can increase the originals size if you have too and work at 600% magnification also a great tip IVV gave me was to save as a gif, this seems to smooth a lot of the jagged edges.
Also she said to use the shape tool instead of filling paths. I found these tips invaluable.
