EDIT: I lost my Dad around 10 years ago. The only voice recording I have is of him mucking about on a Crown tape recorder with my Mum doing an impression of Jimmy Savile on Top of the Pops. Brilliant...

Ah! interesting! I know Tolkein did base some places on Warwick. And that the trilogy was an allegory re the industrial revolution too. But not about Nazi Germany.

I love the book of the Two Towers
but it's easily the limpest of the films. Unlike Happy Toast I actually like the films (well, until the godawful thirty dreary minutes of false endings in Return of the King) but Two Towers tests me. Particularly the utterly pointless diversion, via a Faramir who bears no resemblance to Faramir, to fucking Osgiliath of all fucking places. First, it makes no geographical sense and fucks up the timescale something chronic. Second, no-one would ever put the ring into Osgiliath -- it would be taken. Third, it's just really badly done.
I agree, there is very little wrong with the films.
They're not perfect, but they could and should have been a hell of a lot worse.

Damn straight
Things I loved when I saw Fellowship of the Ring: no Tom fucking Bomba fucking dil, the irritating fat cunt who strolled out of a kids' fucking book to pollute my Lord of the Rings; and they didn't hide the fact that in reality orcs would be horrible creatures and it would be an unpleasant world of blood and death.
The changing of where part 2 ends is an almost criminal perversion of brilliant storytelling. Giving it an almost happy ending instead of the all is lost, Frodo "dead" Sam crying like a big wuss ruined it completely. I lost all faith in Peter Jackson at that point. The utterly shit, drawn out ending to part 3 sealed the deal.

Speaking as a dyed-in-the-wool Tolkien nerd
I think it's stretching it to say that the entire trilogy is an allegory for industrialisation, but it's certainly true that the Scouring of the Shire was about the industrialisation of the Midlands countryside and the loss of what Tolkien (as a wealthy, educated man) viewed as a "better way of life".
He was also open about the Shire being at roughly the latitude of Oxford and the Balfalas being roughly around Sicily, I think it was, or perhaps it was the Bay of Naples.
I didn't say the entire trilogy was I said the end was ;)
(HappyToastGroat froth,

Totally true :)
but saintsandy said the whole trilogy was; I was agreeing with your more limited take on things.
Except the films. I like the films. Except the middle of Two Towers. That can fuck off. Also the terrible CGI of Legolas on an elephant's back. Seriosuly, I can do better than that and I'm an idiot at animation. Pah.
Shelob section was ... alright ... but Frodo and Sam's escape from the tower by the Black Gate was ... awful. Best bit IHMO was Christopher Lee as Saruman. Legend.

The creepiest thing about that show
(other than Derek Acorah) is the fans on its Facebook page. I TOOK THIS PICTURE OF A DUCK AND IT IS A GHOST BECAUSE I DIDN'T SEE IT THERE LAST WEEK, SO GHOSTS.
I read a great article in Chat 'Fate and Fortune' or some other such comic, about a woman who's husband died, and the following year on a seaside holiday a seagull kept visiting her window. She was convinced it was her husband reincarnated. She even had a photo, but as it was an adult Herring Gull it must have been older than 4 years which to me proves that time is an illusion. (Or she was a loon.)
