but have you tried selotape?
i "attached" (read balanced) binoculars on a tripod with the lens of the camera taped on, zoomed in, then set the auto-focus off and twiddled the binocular knobs till it looked ok on the screen.
pressing the button without wibbling was quite tricky though..
