I saw a version of this text on a sign many years ago at a car show
on the seat of a classic car a soldier had taken with him to Germany and brought back again. Apparently, it dates back to the old days of mainframes!

If local shops are providing good quality produce and a service to match, then local shops will survive
If local shops are trading in overpriced low quality tat, then they will die. And good riddance to them.

This Tesco thing annoys me far more than it should
Tesco replacing local shops is the same as those local shops replacing the local market that came before it and that local market replaced the home produce sellers before that etc etc Tesco are simply the current better trader than those around it. But how many of the "local" shops actually are local? most newsagents are part of a chain, most florists are a part of a bigger brand and almost all of it is selling non local produce. Where were the rioters when Mr Miggins corner shop started selling french apples from the wholesaler instead of the local orchard's maggoty crap?
but what fucks me off the most are the twats complaining about Tesco depriving local businesses of income when they no doubt go home and watch their downloaded movies or listen to torrented mp3s and can't see the fucking hypocrisy of their a) denying income to the artists/filmmakers or b) denying income to the local record shop who is closing down not just because of Tesco but mainly because no fucking cunt came and bought his stock when he was open.
so, cunts the lot of them :)

I guess one problem for the smaller shops
(and in my in-laws' town there are quite a few very good ones) is that a lot of people will shop somewhere else if it's a bit cheaper. Being a big chain means you have substantially reduced overheads (sourcing of stock, advertising, distribution, etc) and in the case of Tesco, they will happily undercut a local shop until it goes under and then up the prices, the loss in the meantime being only a tiny blip on the chain's yearly profit. My personal problems with Tesco are also that they will go to amazing lengths to avoid paying tax (such as redirecting all their DVD and CD online shopping through Jersey, etc) and screw farmers over by waiting to pay them for months over the due date of the invoice, knowing that a percentage go bust in the meantime. However, chain newsagents can go get fucked. They have the big distribution networks, but charge more than independent retailers.

As I said on links a while back
the protesters should be rioting against government/councils etc that allow the loopholes like selling from Jersey/Luxembourg etc and not paying up on time - if that is indeed what they are doing like so many other successful companies do. Any one of us would make use of a legally acceptable trick if it saved us a huge chunk of cash, you can't blame Tesco for that, but you can blame the people that make it possible and allow it to continue.

Changes to legislation take time.
Certain parties have had payments from Tesco before and don't feel the need to make changes to laws all that quickly. And every time a hole is closed, some clever cunt at Barclay's or KPMG or PwC finds another one.

Out-of-town supermarkets are great
How can a working mum do her weekly shop by walking round 10 different shops spread 1/2 mile apart then go home on the bus with 6 bags of shopping and two toddlers (one in a pram)

i live in bristol and there are already 5 or 6 supermarkets in the stokes croft, gloucester road area.
Also Stokes Croft is not like your average high street, most of the shops are genuinely independent which makes it a nice place to shop. The community has worked hard over the last 10 years to improve the place while maintaining its character - and in the most part, theyve succeeded.

It's not at all the same as local shops replacing a local market.
It's one huge retailer replacing multiple small retailers.

Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tanhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tins of beans in a Tesco bag. Time to use a cardboard box instead.
