A lot of the solid ideas became fractured and divisive, or tried to be all things to all people, and were distilled across other sites into streamlined upstarts - multiplying the demands for online attention and diluting people's loyalties.
There's also the matter of increased demands by the real world.

which I sense the place has been destroyed by the "internet is a harsh environment, deal with it crowd."
That isn't actually why so many of us are put off with this place these days, it's the fact most of us can't be fucking arsed to deal with twats and mentalists on the internet when we log on after real life, which to be quite frank is quite hard going. The last thing I want to encounter when I get home from work is a barrage of wankers who assume they are somehow being clever or hard online being unpleasant to other people. Barrage of mentalists is a beautiful turn of phrase
I imagine you as a Lord Nelson-type figure, atop the sterncastle of an HMS Victory lookalike, bellowing at his men to stand fast, as an enemy battleship rakes his vessel with cannon fire.
The cannons are shooting mental people and sluts, smashing through the wooden hull of your ship, exploding in balls of blood, flesh, bone-shards, and gibberish.

It's like when you have a TV sitcom where the main character is an obnoxious bastard, say like Blackadder. You watch all the episodes thinking what a dick he is, then you see one where he's up against, say, the German "I voz zer sheep" guy played by Hugh Laurie, and suddenly you find yourself routing for Blackadder because, he may be a cunt, but he's OUR cunt.

Indeed.
I think a lot of opinion was divided. Some people, such as myself, didn't like Moggy after the peado posts. I have to confess I was surprised that some people I respected didn't seem to care too much just because there were giggles to be had. English countryside with nostalgic bit about when Britain was all quaint and yokelish.
Industrial Revolution, when the ordinary people got screwed over and the wealthy bosses got very rich (much like the Olympics organisers).
More dancing. A few dozen Beatles clones mixed in there for some reason.
Big dance number involving a giant Voldemort and Mary Poppins clones.
Something slightly funny with Rowan Atkinson being a bit Mr. Bean-ish and pulling the same faces he's been pulling since the 80s.
Some more WTF London/England stuff. I have no idea what's going on anymore.
Nice to see Mike Oldfield is still going, though.
They should get David Tennant to light the torch while wearing his Dr. Who costume.

The Dark Knight Rises OST - 3. Gotham's Reckoning - Hans Zimmer
it is a variant of strings building to various crescendos which paint a tableau of overcoming a struggle and defeating evil mit multipal boomslaps
Ed:The irony being that I've just realised that it's Bane's theme tune so it infact represents the complete opposite of what I just described.
JAPES!

It is very good indeed
I'm familiar with Hans Zimmer's doings. He has scored a lot of silent movies. Very interesting to see him doing a big comic-book movie.

I'm actually looking forward to the opening ceremony.
If it's naff, we can just laugh it off and say that we Brits never take anything seriously, and neither should the rest of the world.
And if it's any good, we can swan about, rubbing our nipples and winking at every foreigner we meet.
Hail or fail always makes for interesting viewing, and I'm guessing quite a few images from the ceremony will make it onto /board by tomorrow lunchtime.
