Britain's baffling collection of ungrammatical, misspelt, out of date and plain wrong public signs is to have a national audit, with the public recruited as error spotters.
Come on Grammar Nazis, now you can put the world to rights.
I think we should start with 'misspelt' first

The show is in 5 parts but I've started at part 2 as the first part is largely boring. Basically, the contestant Michael Larson, in the middle, memorized the not-so-random patterns of the board to win a then enormous sum of money. They wouldn't hand over the money initially, but eventually gave him his prize.
Wiki is here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Larson
(, Sat 4 Oct 2008, 17:00, Reply)
but the wiki page was very interesting. its a shame ithings didnt work out for him after wards, and what a terrible way to die.
thanks for the link!
(, Sat 4 Oct 2008, 17:21, Reply)
he hacked, learned and used a flawed system to his advantage. I remember reading about this a few years ago, but have never actually seen the show. Will bookmark and watch this evening. Ta!
(, Sat 4 Oct 2008, 17:26, Reply)
Larson's method was astoundingly elegant. Most importantly it requires for the system to be flawed in order for it to work, he figured that out, and spent time discovering pattern of the flaw. It also takes practice to be able to get your timing down so that the hack works. So it's skill in action.
(, Sat 4 Oct 2008, 18:11, Reply)
he didnt cheat, he just learned the patterns. i say well done to him!

...they used to use MS Excel to randomly put the cash values in the boxes- until someone realised that they too were just on a loop, and you could easily predict what value would be in each box.
Until some knob wrote in and mentioned it, instead of going on and fleecing Edmonds for quarter of a million pounds.
They use balls in a bag, now.

the absolute kings of ska are undoubtedly toots and the maytals. this is not a particularly ska-ish tune, but perhaps reflects what ska, rocksteady, and all the early jamaican sounds of the 60's were really all about: taking american r'n'b, soul, and sometimes even a little bit of country, and finding a new way to play it. most often in the early days this was simply a case of covering popular american tunes, before great songwriters (toots included) were given a chance by the top producers of the day.
'bass culture' by lloyd bradley is a fascinating intro to the history jamaican music, and will ensure that you never pull out that mighty mighty bosstones album again.
this song is being played at my wedding, as me and mrs monk-to-be are crazy about it.

am a huge trojan fan too, but for the really best stuff, look up soul jazz's 'dynamite' series: they have the truly funkiest of funk on there.
funnily enough, trojan didn't exist in jamaica, they were just the distribution agent for jamaican tunes in the uk.
