# I collect figures from time to time
and ive always wanted to have a go at doing my own.

This site called shapeways.com takes your 3d models and (after you clean it up a bit first) it gets turned into a 3d plastic model of a size and material of your choosing. They even print in glass and metal.

Amazing stuff really.

This was how mine was made:

and the cartoon colours mean that no shading is required. I just hope i dont make a mistake, or pick the wrong paints, so that it goes gloopy and bleedy.

# What about taking a latex mould copy of it first?
Then you can make plaster or resin duplicates to paint, and keep the original as the master.
(, Mon 12 Jul 2010, 20:52, archived)
# I was thinking of that.
Dunno how good/ detailed the copies would be though, and im scared to fuck about with the original as it was so pricey.
(, Mon 12 Jul 2010, 21:03, archived)
# It's surprisingly easy to get excellent results …
I'd ask the people who did the 3D printing if they've got any tips, and also if they've got any reject material you can practice on (different materials take to latex in different ways, so if you can test on the same material, so much the better).

The trickiest parts are (a) stopping the mould from deforming once you've taken it off the master, and (b) casting things with holes (like the gap between your model's arms and body).

Incidentally, I think it's fab what you've done :)
