# Another Arty landscape
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 20:32, archived)
# woo, but:
TJ: My mate James uses PS Elements a lot. He uses layer masks in conjunction with the 'selection brush'.

What is this 'selection brush' and what is it's equivilent in CS2?
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 20:33, archived)
# I'm not really sure so sorry I can't be much help
Even though I use cs2, I'm not sure what the 'selection brush' is.
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 20:38, archived)
# No, I use CS2,
he uses the 'selection brush' in elements.

I can't find anything which makes him happy.
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 20:38, archived)
#
if he adds a mask ( bottom of the layers pallette ) then paints over his area he does NOT want selected with black ( and if he paints too much, painting back over in white will reveal it again ) he can achieve the same thing.
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 20:46, archived)
# Good golly, either you're very wrong...
Or I am not Lord Manley of Ven but a mere imposter hiding behind the anonymity of his interwebs.
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 20:53, archived)
# eh?
it's the simplest of things. Add a vector mask. Select it, paint in black. Everything in black is masked out. Paint in white and it becomes part of the image again ( i.e. removed from the mask ) finish brushing your masked area and magig wand it.
It's tattyshop basics. Google layer or vector masking.
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 20:57, archived)
# Eh nothing.
I really am not Lord Manley. He has gone to put the little Manleys to bed, and left his 'pooter in my vile and evil hands. Mwahaha.

That's not to say I don't think that you are a cunt, just that it wasn't me that said it this time.

# Yeah I've gathered that now. Do me a favour
and piss in his ear for me.

# You made him laugh out loud.
Which, since it stopped him blathering on about Exeter City's game today was a blessed relief.

# Could it be
the quick mask thingy?

Under the colour selection in the main tool bar there are two rectangles with circles in. You can use those to 'paint' your selection area with the normal drawing tools.

You can also use filters on it too, to blur the edges for example.
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 20:38, archived)
# there is no equivalent as far
as my limited knowledge goes. It seems to be a halfwits way of masking.
www.adobe.co.uk/digitalimag/tips/phsel2mask/main.html

Tattyshop masking is simple enough without kiddies stabilizers to help you.

# cutout filter, raise the levels.
then paint daubs, fade to about 30% then gaussian blur .5 or 1 pixel should just about do it in less than 2 minutes.
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 20:43, archived)
# This.
I couldn't just do it, but I thought it must be something this easy.
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 20:47, archived)
# It is actually a bit more complicated then that
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 20:50, archived)
# it might be the way that you do it but in all honesty that's all it takes
just being honest. Also I don't like people being secretive. Sharing technique is a good thing. I do it all the time and the day crew slaughter me for revealing my 'magic' but if I can do it then anyone can so it's good to share.
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 20:52, archived)
# Ok maybe I'm just doing it in a more complicated way
The way I do it takes about 20/30 mins (not from a tutorial)
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 20:56, archived)
# then write a tutorial
because it's satisfying when people want to copy what you do and you can help them.
For instance. I developed a way of painting in tattyshop ( more by accident than design ) and pepole wanted to know how I did it. Some because they wanted to do it and some because they thought it must be filters. Well no filters and I wrote a tutorial for it. People like the sharing, it gets you offers of cake.

# An admirable stance
if you don't mind me saying so
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 21:07, archived)
# cheers.
When I draw something ( not often, but it happens ) then I can't really teach that, but as for other techniques that rely on knowledge of tattyshop tools rather than innate talent then why keep it to yourself? I'm not better than anyone else because I found a shithot way of making images. I'm all for sharing and free love. Oh and Terry's chocolate oranges.
Less tan 12 months ago I did not have a clue what photoshop did. I used Paint Shop Pro 8. I could not even figure out how to paste a new image in tattyshop. All I have done since then is fill my spare time ( and I have a lot ) with tutorials. I've always been a sponge for learning and as such I've got a bit better at stuff and if I can share that I will. There was a few very bad judgements and, when it was close, it seemed that it went to the TV when the ref. was wrong in Our favour (and, clearly, both those tries were tries) but not when it was against us.

I don't know why a knock on by Ireland became a penalty to ireland, why a foot in touch was ignored or why the short line out was disallowed OR why the lineout was then taken at the lineout position and not at the point where the ball went into touch - I guess watching in the pub is arse after all.

( in no particular order ) Hed Kandi twisted Disco, Hed Kandi Deep yearmix, Buddy Holly the definitive collection, James Millionaires, Jamiroquoi Dynamite, A Tribe called Quest and as always at least once a day something by David Sylvian. I too have eclectic tastes but I'm not totally out of touch for a 40 year old ( I'm thinking anyway, but I seriously have lost touch with many of these new bands in the 'kaiser chiefs' mould. Simply because they are shite.
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 18:49, archived)
# ha ha there is indeed a lot of shit around at the moment
thought I do like the Kaisers they are grating a little now.
I do enjoy a good bit of buddy holly now-and-then, saw the buddy holly story in london years ago, knew nothing about him until then and came out of the show and bought a CD.
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 18:51, archived)
# I disagree!
There's some ace stuff around at the moment, you just have to dig a little deeper to find it - mainly because there is so MUCH shite being pumped out by the major labels, the diamonds in the mud are getting more and more overlooked.

New stuff by Six Organs of Admittance, Mono, Gravenhurst, Apothecary Hymns, Future Kings of England and Terracid have all been burning my bunsen of late. And next month I'm off to see nearly all my favourite bands playing under one roof in the US, so I'm certainly not complaining! Woo!

# The Secret Machines!

I listen to 6 music, that play all the ace things on there.

# it's just not my bag man!
I'm more into Jazz and Acid funk/fusion plus what is fast becoming known as "Disco" these days so I'm more of a fan of Mousse T, Kush, Solasso, Suzanne Palmer, Bob Sinclair etc. I really tire of all this recycled Seattle grunge that is going around. Franz Ferdinand are a prime example. What fuckwit ever told those guys they a. had any talent and b. sounded pleasant. It was shite in the 90's but at least there were not 1001 bands doing it as there seem to be now? White Stripes? Is it any wonder I collect guns? There will be need of a cull soon!
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 19:11, archived)
# I'm currently listning to Gogol Bordello
before that it was Electric Six, Faih No More, The white Strpies, Flowmotion...

all I listned to yesterday was Pearl Jam and Rage Against The Machine, and some Babes in Toyland.

# Not meaning to be offensive or aloof
but you'd not last five minutes in my house. That kind of music is the sort which I particularly dislike. Almost as much as country music.
But each to their own. I don't tell people what they should listen to ( just snigger behaind their backs at the fact that they are ignorant philistines ;))
My nephew loves Linkin Park and plays nothing but when he visits. Drives me bonkers, I hate the shite.

Currently on the gramaphone ;) is some smashing Prefab Sprout.
(, Sat 18 Mar 2006, 19:03, archived)

I'm not defending (and could never defend anyway) what he's done since, but I'm old enough to remember the hype surrounding him in the early 70s. I was more into Captain Beefheart myself, but Gary Glitter appealed to the type of kid who today would probably be goths and emos.
