TJ: My mate James uses PS Elements a lot. He uses layer masks in conjunction with the 'selection brush'.
What is this 'selection brush' and what is it's equivilent in CS2?

if he adds a mask ( bottom of the layers pallette ) then paints over his area he does NOT want selected with black ( and if he paints too much, painting back over in white will reveal it again ) he can achieve the same thing.

eh?
it's the simplest of things. Add a vector mask. Select it, paint in black. Everything in black is masked out. Paint in white and it becomes part of the image again ( i.e. removed from the mask ) finish brushing your masked area and magig wand it.
It's tattyshop basics. Google layer or vector masking.

Under the colour selection in the main tool bar there are two rectangles with circles in. You can use those to 'paint' your selection area with the normal drawing tools.
You can also use filters on it too, to blur the edges for example.

there is no equivalent as far

just being honest. Also I don't like people being secretive. Sharing technique is a good thing. I do it all the time and the day crew slaughter me for revealing my 'magic' but if I can do it then anyone can so it's good to share.

then write a tutorial
because it's satisfying when people want to copy what you do and you can help them.
For instance. I developed a way of painting in tattyshop ( more by accident than design ) and pepole wanted to know how I did it. Some because they wanted to do it and some because they thought it must be filters. Well no filters and I wrote a tutorial for it. People like the sharing, it gets you offers of cake.

cheers.
When I draw something ( not often, but it happens ) then I can't really teach that, but as for other techniques that rely on knowledge of tattyshop tools rather than innate talent then why keep it to yourself? I'm not better than anyone else because I found a shithot way of making images. I'm all for sharing and free love. Oh and Terry's chocolate oranges.

I too have eclectic tastes but I'm not totally out of touch for a 40 year old ( I'm thinking anyway, but I seriously have lost touch with many of these new bands in the 'kaiser chiefs' mould. I disagree!
There's some ace stuff around at the moment, you just have to dig a little deeper to find it - mainly because there is so MUCH shite being pumped out by the major labels, the diamonds in the mud are getting more and more overlooked.
New stuff by Six Organs of Admittance, Mono, Gravenhurst, Apothecary Hymns, Future Kings of England and Terracid have all been burning my bunsen of late. And next month I'm off to see nearly all my favourite bands playing under one roof in the US, so I'm certainly not complaining! Woo!

I'm more into Jazz and Acid funk/fusion plus what is fast becoming known as "Disco" these days so I'm more of a fan of Mousse T, Kush, Solasso, Suzanne Palmer, Bob Sinclair etc. I really tire of all this recycled Seattle grunge that is going around. Franz Ferdinand are a prime example. What fuckwit ever told those guys they a. had any talent and b. sounded pleasant. It was shite in the 90's but at least there were not 1001 bands doing it as there seem to be now? White Stripes? Is it any wonder I collect guns? There will be need of a cull soon!
