This is a link post I'm not sure what to do about this. I made this!
Does anyone remember this film I made (well, made with some other people) a while ago? b3ta.com/links/Forrest_Gump_in_one_minute_in_one_take

Someone's sent me an entry to a Nokia filmmaking competition that's literally a shot for shot, line for line, idea for idea remake of it, this has been the first I've heard of it. I wouldn't mind except the person who entered it has won a "Critics Choice" award out of this rehash, including a FUCKING TRIP TO CANNES.

So yeah, I'm not sure what to do. Anyone have any advice? Nokia's response is in the Twitters here: twitter.com/Nokia_UK

What a bastard. I'm sure the power of the internets can help. Might be an idea to put this out there as much as possible, reddit, digg etc and hope internet justice takes it course. Unless there's some kind of legal stuff you can try.

Twitter blocked so I can;t see Nokia's response. Just point out the Digital Copywrite act and how you will report them and possibly try to get compensation fvrom them over it might help.

Also try an EECB (Executive Email Carpet Bomb) consumerist.com/2007/05/how-to-launch-an-executive-email-carpet-bomb.html for a higher chance of getting a decent response from them.

Indonesia as seen through the eyes of an Expatriate. It was used during a Burns Supper in 2007 and I put it up on my blog.

Three weeks ago at an event within Jakarta(which was attended by about 7,000 people) the free programme had the same piece in a three page illustrated spread. Knowing the c*nt responsible for the programme I challenged him on it and that was the response.

I will extract revenge in some manner, as yet undecided...

No idea where you stand on that since they've already sent the winner over there. The least they could do is drag them back kicking and screaming and give you a trip in their place. I'm sure they could afford it despite their dodgy profit announcements this year!

Good luck with it all and I hope it all has a happy ending!

This is a normal post
I have some experience in this area - if you can prove in court (and I think you can) that you had the idea first and that she stole it from you, then you are owed all proceeds she has received from that work, including prizes. That would mean that she'd have to cough up whatever the trip was worth. Nokia wouldn't be legally responsible, but they are a big corporation and wouldn't want to lose face, so you might be able to get them to help, but they're not legally obliged to do anything. She won the competition fair and square from where they're standing. It would have been part of the competition submission that she asserted the work was her own, the buck stops with them.
(, Tue 22 Jun 2010, 1:40, Reply)
This is a normal post quite a sizeable prize on top of the actual trip itself
Critic’s Choice Award

Chosen by an official MOFILM panel, the Critic's Choice Award is given to the film that stands out above the rest in creative brilliance and execution.

The director and a friend will win 4 days at the world famous CannesAdvertising Festival, with £600 spending money! There you'll have your film screened alongside the MOFILM brand winner at the official MOFILM ceremony. The director will also receive the kit worth over £1300, including a HD camera, audio equipment, editing gear and a tripod.

This is a normal post Small claims court
Technically you should be able to take that to small claims as it's under the limit...

It'll only cost you £30 / £50 if you do it yourself. Doing a bit of homework on the net should get you the info on what to sue her for.

But I agree, it's your idea, your work and she's got the profit. You should be entitled to at the least the monetary value of the prize, and possibily some compensation as she's had all that promotion of her "talents" too.

Shame we couldn't muster up the cash between us to take her to court properly. They go on and on about internet piracy and this is no different.

This is a normal post Don't be put off by the initial corporate response. Find a human.
The man you need to contact is ShootingPeople.org's Creative Director James Mullighan. When judging an unquestionable rip-off of your film the winner, he was looking for the following qualities:

"In choosing a winner, I was looking for assuredness, soundness of concept and overcoming of the natural impediments of making a film with such limited resources as a mobile device." - James Mullighan (source)

Assuredness is lacking if the copier can't trust their own ideas, and any credit for soundness of concept belongs to you. The winner accepted the prize under false pretences and the judge who put their reputation behind that deserves to know about it. They may also agree that you deserve credit for the work you put in, but it would naive to think that there won't be pressure from some quarters to smooth things over as quietly as possible.

All sorts of social media channels for ShootingPeople.org are listed here under a 'contact us' function promising a quick reply. An open door like that usually earns a private email in the first instance IMO, but it's your call if you want to ask them about it in Twitter, for example.

and idea, as you have evidence of coming up with the idea first and they have blatently ripped you off you can sue and collect their winnings. Also I'd suggest going to the papers as you should get the recognition you so rightly deserve as well.

And correct.

Nokia isn't going to award him the prize, he's not entitled to it as he didn't win - he didn't even enter, but if he can prove sbe stole the idea, she's obliged to give the prize to him.

We'd like to thank everybody that took the time to enter and vote in the MiniMo competition, the quality and volume of MiniMo entries are great.

All people entering the contest confirmed that the content was their own creation and they had full rights for the footage, meaning that those judging the competition had full trust in the submissions.

We are currently investigating the alleged plagiarism concerns and would like to apologise for any issues encountered with voting and moderation. The entries we're moderated and judged by industry experts, we acted on the information that we were given and trust that our partners genuinely acted with the entrants best interest at heart.

How many other similar things are being done all the time to be used as coursework or to gain work that we never hear about?

If someone has a chance they should save a copy of the Nokia film for posterity since I imagine it'll be gone if it isn't already. I can't imagine she'll be posting it to Youtube or anything now.
