That is doing it properly.
It's a tradition that came over here from Ireland and was originally turnips. Emigrants took it over to the colonies and, as there weren't any turnips, adapted it to pumpkins instead.
So doing it with a turnip is authentically retro.

it is rather good
you can import and vectorise line drawings and ink them and then set up all the 2d elements into a a sort of 3d enviroment so when you make camera moves it all moves with perspective.
