pen or mouse? and are you tracing with a brush or pen tool?
first thing is to get some depth into the work by varying the brush stroke size. Basic rule of thumb is to make things closer to you have thicker lines. It also helps to add dome fade to the brush. ( it depends on what the process you use is as to how you do that. but basically changing the brush properties in the shape dynamics to have some fade ( about 200-240 ) makes it appear that the line fades out to a point, the way that a real pen might.)
I personally find that it is quicker and more effective for me to use the pen tool to create a path, then I stroke the path with a preset brush, delete the path and move on. I have an action script set up for it and it's very quick. It ends up with a more natural looking line.

neat
i've got a wacom tablet, but i mostly use mouse and brush tool i'll try some stuff you mentioned thanks!
be doing a line art and tracing tutorial soon I think. It's one of the things I've had in mind for a while. I'm no expert and there is no right ot wrong, just I've had a lot of interest in how I do stuff. Basically the easiest way to make things pop is just to get away from the preset brushes. Just read up on brush settings and use some pen pressure fade ( or just normal fade for mouse ) and some size jitter so the pen varies thickness along the line. Use thicker lines for figure outlining and use thickness to create depth . Just those small changes can make something look far more natural. Oh and you can also use the selection tool to make your lines. just like the pen tool you can stroke a selection with the last selected brush. The good thing about that is you can use the selection modifiers like 'smooth' to get rid of the awkward angles that always scream 'traced' at you.

Final Fantasy as a "series" shouldn´t exist.
When each game tells a story that is completely independent of the previous games' events - like they never happened at all - it goes shit in my concept.
If FFIV was called "Air Ships are teh kewl lol", FFV was called "This game is about jobs", and FFVI was "The game that lasts more than it should", they would make much more sense.

It's the only one I haven't completed.
The disc fucked up just after I got onto Lunatic Pandora. Could never be bothered to buy another one.
imo the best FF game ever (played all of them), but you should try again, X was real good and 9 aint bad.

I forced myself to complete 12 a month or so ago.
I've played several Final Fantasies and I always get to the bit before the final boss then try to do all the other little bits around the game, then realise there is a fucking ridiculous amount of stuff (most of which so obscure even with a guide it is difficult to find) and then give up.
N.B. I am redexxing on this.

I did EVERYTHING in FF8 except beat Omega weapon.
I got Eden from Ultima weapon, though.
And I think if you're redexing it's just you, it's fine at my end :/
Yeah, well I don't think they had as many sidequests and shit back in those days.
In FFVII the only extra stuff was the Weapons, Master Materia, the two characters and Ultimate weapons/limit breaks.
The stuff never fucking ends nowadays.

I think I'll have to wait until I finish my degree at this rate
then just nail it over summer or something. Im tempted to get oblivion as you can pick it up for about £12 on play. But that will still waste many many hours. Saying that tho, ive wasted about 5 and a half days playing COD4 online.

The thing is though in RPGs the stuff doesn't really serve a realistic purpose, especially Final Fantasy, because you don't need the ultimate weapons or great materia to defeat the final boss.
And after that, there's no more game for the stuff to serve any purpose.
I think it would be useful to have more stuff earlier on where you can get a good item which you wouldn't normally be able to acquire til later in the game.

Hahah, yeah.
I got all the GFs in VIII, most of which I levelled up fully. All my characters are full level, too, as I went to the islands of heaven and hell and battled level 99 ruby dragons over and over again :D I spent about four hours doing it. And I also picked up a shitload of magic there, too, so I equipped 99 ultimas or auras to strength and hp :D
Yeah, see I always think that whenever I get to just before the boss at the end of any FF game.
Then I realise it's fucking pointless, not to mention that it would take god knows how many days to actually complete the stuff. Though now with achievements and trophies, game developers won't be happy until they make you do their boring shit.
