Such is the downfall of most horror films.
The characters up for the chop are so unlikeable, you want them to die. Paranormal Activity was fairly different though, in the way that you sort of hope they'll get through their problem... well, for all the time you're awake during the film.

I did actually enjoy the film
but I agree: Not enough monster, Annoying characters, Improbable video footage (would you really be still filming when under attack from monsters - I think I would drop even an expensive camera and run like fuck), Stupid plot (Big monster destroying buildings, bridges, tanks and even the army can't hold it off yet these people are running towards it to save a girl they don't even know is alive), Impossible Video Camera battery life (I want to know what battery make it is as I would want to power a small village with it)
But apart from that it's a good popcorn movie with some nice effects and leaves you with a "What if" feeling.

It's a decent weekend/background noise film.
To me, it's like Tron Legacy in the way it's just pretty to look at (I quite liked that film too, but admittedly, the plot was wank). I think this whole first-person perspective film idea died a LONG time ago.
The hell of it is, a few examples of this 'sub-genre' always seem pretty interesting judging by the previews, concept, etc, but always fall flat on their face. Apollo 18 COULD have been good, but was quite disappointing to say the least.

I think it could have been so much more clever, what with it being in a computer and all.
Like, what kind of programs are all of the denizens of the Grid? I can assume the club is some sort of media player and Daft Punk are mp3s, or something.
I think the main driving force behind this film is the special effects and soundtrack, which is AMAZING.

I think Cloverfield was the pinacle of the shaky-cam films, IMHO.
Which is why JJ Abrams and Co. have painted themselves in a corner with a prequel (as they had previously alluded to) as you couldn't possibily do the same stunt again and it would lose it's impact as you would know what was coming. In the original there are little clips (Easter-Eggs) that show a sub-plot of a Japanese Chemical Company who's satelite dish falls to Earth falling into the Atlantic Ocean, and is said to awaken the ancient monster who comes ashore at Cloverfields Manhatten.
