You can reupload videos, but I don't know if that affects the posted date
( , Thu 25 Feb 2021, 20:21, Share, Reply)
The first trick was to delete all the hundreds of videos that didn't come true
The second trick was to snip the videos that did come true down to the actual date. Originally the videos were 30 or so minutes long with the name of the person repeated with dates for every day of the year. When someone died you snip the video down to the 7 second clip with the name and the date they died. This doesn't alter the date that the original video was loaded.

but I have been to his place on Southwold Pier.
One time I was there, he was there doing maintenance on some of the machines and we got chatting. He's a thoroughly lovely chap!
Some mates and I also managed to persuade him to give us a tour of his workshop, and spent an afternoon talking to him about stuff he was building, stuff we were building, clocks, his chickens...
He's amazing.

I thought that. It's highly dubious he caught it on the trip.
He had more than one negative result after returning. He developed pneumonia, as poorly geriatrics often do, a little while after his return and underwent treatment. Only then came the covid, after he was already sick, and hospitalized.
But, yeah, I really don't think he had any business flying. The question really is not why did he go on the trip, but why BA was flying. If they're legally flying, people will board the planes.

I actually don't blame BA or Barbados at all.
He could have said no. He could have said in a couple of months when I'm vaccinated. He could have waited until after all non-essential travel was banned.
The timing of doing it at Christmas, when we were all unable to see our families was particularly awful.

Half the article seems to be bemoaning the fact that the research is dropping off, neatly ignoring that it's a solved problem. We know how to stop transmission, and there's multiple vaccines being rolled out.
( , Wed 24 Feb 2021, 10:20, Share, Reply)
And each time it's been shown that the vaccines are effective.
So we're in a maintenance phase. If a variant turns up that the vaccines are ineffective against, the research will pick up again, but until they've got a new target in sight it's only natural that the research will drop off.
( , Wed 24 Feb 2021, 11:01, Share, Reply)
The global vaccination roll out will generate a vast amount of data
So that is going to be an active area of research for a while. Hope at least one of the papers is going to conclude definitely how the virus jumped from bats to humans

Fuck's sake, you're only happy when the sky is falling aren't you?
It even says in that article that the Pfizer one is effective, but no, you have to go with the knee-jerk "we're all fucking doomed" angle.
The different vaccines work in different ways. We've got an array of ways to attack it now and where one fails, another succeeds. If one is shown to be ineffective, it'll be modified until it is effective.
The Guardian sells doom. That's it's angle. Nothing good is happening and we're all fucked. Branch out a little.

I took a three month break from news sites last year and was much happier as a result. I'll probably do it again soon. If something important happened, I still found out about it. There's nothing to be gained from doomscrolling, and a lot to lose.

I enjoy numberphile, but that is just bad.

I'm not so sure
I enjoy watching people who do something well, doing what they do well.
Largely, those people have back-stories, and sometimes they show us those.
I think you're being too hard on him - you don't want to watch non-maths related content..? Fine.
But I think this is better than Gryff-Rhys Jones (or, god forbid, Portillo) on a train to Somewhere Forrin espousing for the sake of it.
Yeah yeah, I'm not setting the bar too high,I know.....

I like Portillo on the train. Giff Gaff Jones has not held my attention for more than a minute since the eighties.

A lot of people like you are into trains and Conservatism.
I shall never forgive Portillo for agreeing to do "Things We Forgot To Remember." He didn't just agree to do it, which would be bad enough, but he gleefully asked that stupid cunting question more than twice per episode.
There are a number of other things I shall never forgive him for, like homophobic hypocrisy and all the other nasty shit he supported in the 90s. But come on. Things We Forgot To Remember? Cuuuuuuuunt.

It's not as good as a lot of Tom Scott videos
I like a lot of his videos. Good, bite-size nuggets of info, mostly. Nowadays, Numberphile is reaching for 30 mins info, which is still good, but becomes TL;DW, which is a shame, because they're not the rambling, anecdotal-laden drivel, which plagues YouTube.

Maths videos sound fucking boring if I'm honest. Like maybe if it's 3am and I still can't sleep, I'll be choosing between the guy who does videos about the underground and maths videos, and maybe then I'll give it a go.

You probably find chess boring too, which is a shame as his video on the knight’s tour is fascinating. Seriously.

Isn't it down to YouTube algorithms though?
I've heard complaints from people that short films don't get ranked as high as longer ones (with more adverts) so fewer people are working on quick animations or short explanations and instead making longer and longer products. This does explain a lot of the drivel that seems to be going into stuff now and would explain why this guy isn't doing really pithy little 3 minute vids any longer.
