Real time face resynthesis
Just saw a presentation by the researcher shown at the beginning of this clip. The project was slightly different from this one. Here they're manipulating cues to gender independently in the audio and video signal. Cool.

trying to parse the visual information into different streams
When you talk, some face movements are cues to the speech contrasts (like lip closing in pick vs tick), and other movements are cues to things like your emotional state (smiling, squinting, etc.). Its effortless for people to separate these, but not so easy for a computer. They had been working on some algorithms that would separate the two, but this is pretty hard to do except in a very basic way- filtering out the fast movements as speech cues and the slower movements as the rest.
It was cool to see though. The input was a video of someone talking, and after analysis the video was a resynthesized face that just had the smile/frown/surprise expressions changing over time.

I seriously don't get the angry drunk thing, just ruins a night. Maybe the Police should be allowed to prescribe ecstasy to anyone they fear may kick off, would make for safer and more hilarious streets on a Saturday night...

ffs.
this is not new, it has been going on for centuries. there is a famous quote (i think it is in paxman's the english) and the bishop or whoever is talking about all the youths getting well pissed and lairy and fighting in the streets on friday night, and you read it and it sounds like now, but is actually from about 1610 or something.
also , it is easy to scoff at this stuff, but remember, most of these people dont do nice office jobs, they have shitty boring factory and warehouse Mcjobs, and if your life consisted of standing at the end of plastic extrusion machine for 10 hours a day 5 (or more) days per week (or nights even) and you know there is no way out, you are stuck doing this shite for ever, then come friday night and you are gonna want to let loose.
cos where are you going to go? you are from the wrong class: similar to how the posh give/gave each other jobs, the middle classes do the same now, and you are from the wrong class, the school on your cv is the wrong one. you are stuck. what else can you do? go university? no, cos it is full of middle class kids who you will not fit in with and get on with (many who have wealthy enuff parents that they have no or minimal debt wheras you will graduate with full tuition fees/loan debts).
and yeah, i know, you (the reader) went to uni, parents not rich etc etc; still, the ratio of working class kid who go uni is ridiculously low (there was a bbc article with the stats recently, cant find it now - google fail - here is an old one news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/4826924.stm).
so fuck it, maybe if the country hadn't had 30 years of asset stripping, the social enginering of thatcher, outsourcing, etc etc and there were opportunities for the workng class poor to do something better with their lives perhaps this problem would have lessened.
Also, finally, we are drinking less now than 10 years ago (source - again the fucking beeb lol) so maybe this is on the decline as no fucker can afford it any more.
sorry for rant and length. well im not really sorry, just saying it. like when you were a kid and were forced to apologise to your sister for throwing her barbie doll down a drain in an "action man saves barbie" game gone wrong.

There's no excuse for not being able to handle your drink
Although I agree with the main thrust of what you're saying, the Gin epidemic etc I know about, actually there was an interesting and only slightly rubbish arty exploration of the history of drinking culture in the UK on the telly not so long ago, stereotypical louts reading old accounts of situations not uncommon on our streets today
Point is, Im a student I know, I drink a hell of a lot and don't get into fights, and I bump into family who do the same and work in manual jobs who similarly dont get them selves into a fight every weekend, why should our nights out be ruined by fuckers who look for a fight after 2 shandies. Frankly if you cant drink without being able to control you're self you shouldn't be drinking at all.

I have to disagree
I've now worked in the booze trade for almost fifteen years, and as a now pub manager I'll have to present the opposite case. I live and work
in east london and the twice I've been cut have been from men in suits. Those "factory" people want a beer. Mayhaps they also want to stab me, but they haven't ... yet. An annoyed/angry/frustrated/whatever bank fella caused the lovely long and often painful scar on my upper arm.
I'm not sure that your findings tally with mine.

And yet bankers will always throw bricks at my head? The missus is one of them bankers and perhaps I lack the education to understand this catechism of violence, but, perhaps because of where I live they are failed bankers, but people in suits are who I fear. Those chavs will at least shake my hand.

sorry to nitpick, but ....
you mentioned "they" have shit jobs in factories so they want to go smash the world up, then talk about thatcher ruining everything by sending all the manufacturing jobs (i.e. shit repetitive jobs on factory lines) to other countries so they cant go to uni as there are no opportunities.
surely if all the manufacturing jobs were still there they would be in the exact same position doing the exact same thing.

I grew up in Lewisham
Spent 19 years of my life there, got into a couple of little scraps in a comprehensive school but that was it. Since then, I've never got into a fight, and it's not fucking difficult! A lot of the people I was in class with at the time have either spent time or are still in prison (murders in some cases), and some are dead (non-natural causes, I assure you), but what am I doing differently that I don't even get into punch-ups?
I walk down the stupid streets, I get drunk and run down the street with my trollied comrades, and I even end up in chip shops at 3am but never get into fights!
I don't care what your fucking background is, there's no excuse for this shit.
Although if the point you're trying to make is that kebab violence is not the fault of recent governments then I agree with you. If it isn't, then I might need to re-read your post a couple of times...

I have to disagree.
I'm sure you're right in some cases, but I think you're generalising too much.
I grew up in a "deprived area" and a lot of my friends back there are the poorly-educated factory/call centre/supermarket workers you describe, doing crap jobs for crap money. Me too - I don't have a degree and I've never earned more than £14k. However on the whole, they don't tend to get into fights and most of them don't even go out drinking that often - why go out and pay through the nose for drinks and kebabs when you can get ten times as much booze (and some frozen pizzas) from Lidl for the same money? Yes, some of them are violent fuckwits, but it's a minority, and it's rarely the ones who would be considered the most unfortunate members of society.
Happily I've escaped to a nice middle-class area of the country. It's all very white-collar. Living here I've lost count of how many of pillars of the community brag about getting absolutely wasted on a weekly basis and vomiting all over a bar/kebab shop/hotel/whatever that they don't seem to realise some poor underpaid working-class oik will have to clear up. Or if they do, it's okay, because cleaners aren't Real People or something.
To summarise: an arsehole is an arsehole is an arsehole regardless of social class. And often it's those nice white-collars who have the means to be the bigger arseholes.

McJobs
I don't think university attendance has as much to do with class as it does from your parents putting value on education. My Dad's a truck driver... But he works bloody hard, and taught me to do the same. Both of my parents wanted me to go to uni, and I did. I didn't "not fit in", because there were people from all backgrounds there, an part of the experience is being able to get on with a wide variety of people.
So, when people say that working class kids can't go to uni, I think "bollocks". What they actually lack is an attitude that values education and values hard work. Unfortunately we have an ever widening underclass, who have never worked, who will never have these values.

15 years ago and never ONCE looked back.
England, even though I spent the first 22 years of my life there is a fucking shit hole.
Seriously, that video is only half of the story. The other half is that there's an alternative. The fact that people continue (choose) to live with that filth is more depressing than the fact that it exists.

You
expats are always whining. Also I think coming to a forum based in britain and commenting about how terrible it is here counts as looking back. If you don't like it sod off (which I see you've thoughtfully already done) and keep your opinions to yourself. I happen to like it here and am very proud of my country because I can't reason correctly and think that the acheivements of others of the same nation somehow reflect well upon me.

well the replies have been interesting
nothing like a class debate to bring out how middle class b3ta really is. to briefly answer some of the points above...
@roar - that is an anecdote, not evidence. your personal experience does not define the debate - sorry. also using the phrases "correct class" and "wrong class" shows up your prejudice. try going to st annes in nottingham, or broadweater farm, or toxteth, see how it goes.
further, yeah, ive seen posh cunts acting like dicks, they appear to have this sense of "entitlement" - like they can have what they want/do what they want cos mummy and daddy have shitloads of money. (which is also an anecdote)
@firkinfedup - so basically poor people are poor because they are feckless and lazy, too lazy to learn programming and get a good job? They should all rise up and learn to program and then everything will be rosy? fuck me, its so easy, i wonder why there are millions of poor people n this country. wow, do you vote tory or something? thatch would have loved you for comments like that.
@bruxia - back in the day, manufacturing jobs here were good jobs, you learnt skills and trades, the money was good, and could move on from this to other occupations. are you saying that either (a) there are no manufacturing jobs here at all, or (b) the ones that are here are awesome, or (c) both. cos a lot of manufacturing that is left is shit jobs. check it out mate, go to agencies and do some of the crap jobs you see in the windows and then tell me things are rosy here.
@jahled - "Working class spastics" - way to dis two groups of people dude. god this is a gross phrase.

It comes down to one simple fact...
The ones causing all the trouble are tossers! And like all tossers, they either:
a) Don't believe they are a tosser, so pretty much have no idea how to rein in their behaviour.
or
b) Don't care that they are a tosser, so wouldn't give a crap about causing trouble and ruining everybody else's night, whether they are sober or drunk!
What makes it all worse is that when something happens, rather than dealing with it reasonably, everyone is treated like a tosser by everyone else anyway.
Personally, if there is trouble, deal with it reasonably, and anybody that can't, deserves to be shot. Reasonable does not mean "they must agree with me" - it means finding out what's wrong, if there's a solution possible, and then dealing with it.
Since we can't even get sober people to act like this, there's fat chance of getting a bunch of drunk people who are highly agitated and already oppressed to do it. Heck, we can't even get our own Law Enforcement agencies to treat people with respect - all they want to do is crack skulls and bundle people in the back of a van.
I've been arrested and cautioned for a drunk and disorderly, just for apologising to someone who I accidentally offended without realising it, simply because people already assumed I was tosser and wasn't worthy of respect. It's ridiculous out there these days.
Blame society all you want, but the people doing the blaming should remember that quite a few of them are the ones that actually made society the way it is today. When you are being a tosser to someone, drunk or sober, because someone else was a tosser to you, you are just being a tosser - it's the classic perpetuation of misery. Where ever you are on the social spectrum - if you are being a tosser, you're just making life difficult for everyone else. Want to fix that - then stop being a tosser!

The much loved establishment at 1:31 to 1:53 burnt down back end of last year.

Worthwhile Canadian Initiative
One poster argued this has been happening since 1610, but it is also because of Margaret Thatcher, which doesn't really make sense. (Not to defend Thatcher.)
The UK has a really low murder rate but a lot of violent crime, and it has as much to do with your drinking than class.
I'm from Canada, and my brother went to Oxford. A friend of his got worked over by a gang of toughs after the pubs closed. He was on the losing end of it so but he was grappling, so bit off a chunk of the other guy's ear. A few days later my brother saw a guy walking around with a piece of his ear missing. So they were both students at Oxford.
My point being, it's not a lower class thing. It's part of what people do for fun - go out, drink too much and get in a fight. Another friend of mine got pulled to the pavement in London and was kicked in the head for calling someone a cunt.
People get drunk and get in fights just everywhere, but in parts of the UK it seems worse. The fact that "bottled" and "glassed" mean what they do in the UK is a sign that maybe drunken violence is a bit too common.

Sugar Ray Robinson vs. Carmen Basilio 1 HD
Being able to see them so clearly is rare for old footage. you can appreciate their ability much better than with most of the stuff available.
maybe worth a watch even if you're not a massive boxing fan.
(sugar ray robinson as widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time (in terms of resume certainly the best))
probably better to watch with the sound off.

Christ...
They really didn't bother with blocking in those days did they? I've seen modern matches ended by MUCH less than some of the blows they're taking in that match.
I remember seeing a clip of Archie Moore VS. Rocky Marciano. It was literally like watching Rocky. No blocking, no weaving, just a total, utter slug fest. If I remember correctly, Moore was one of only two boxers to knock Marciano down.
Bunch of pansies these days...
Edited for fact checking.

There's quite a bit of body work, so low hands probably serves to block a fair amount
It's true to say that quite a lot landed though (loads of jabs), especially as they started to fatigue towards the end.
One thing to note however is how they roll with punches, it's not just about landing but landing heavily. if you're leaning away or moving with the punch it'll probably cause less harm than first appears.
edit: also lots of boxers (modern and old) will keep their hands low to allow them to counter more fluidly. sergio martinez for instance.

Is that Welterweight ?
It's a shame a bout the music, but the long rounds and losing won't make me rich attitude shines.
Also, Sugar Baby was a dancer, not a boxer; or so he would say. Lovely bloke from what I have heard and his politeness was legendary. My love of boxing fizzled about the same time as attitude and big entrances started becoming the norm; but I have always been drawn to the amateur scene - great bouts to watch and the lads are always humble both in victory and defeat. I think perhaps this is why it isn't big sport on the telly, the people bashing each other aren't what the public expect and when they are, the boxing fans don't like it .I should have really given it a go... may well do one day...we'll see, the hill is only 3 years away.
Anyways, have dance:

Much of what you say is true
But you'll probably find there are more gentlemen in boxing than arseholes.
The real reason why boxing isn't on TV is because itv and the bbc were stupid enough to give big multi fight deals to boxers who hadn't even fought a single professional bout (harrison, khan), which is obviously retarded, and were hurt when it all blew up.
they dont take risks and can't see the potential in a sport which had massive cultural significance for over a hundred years in this country. They wouldn't even know how to promote it or what to buy.
it's sad.
