So that is why it is called a cable car. A tram has a motor (engine or electric motor) and that is a world wide definition, I think.

... and I don't really follow why it's not VR.

I agree it's not stereo 3D, but with the landscape moving with the acceleration of the bus, I would think the experience is very real indeed. It's also a 360-degree experience in the sense that you can look out of any window just by turning in your seat.

Since you are moving, you would also get quite a good depth perception from the apparent relative speed of different objects. May not feel quite "real" but I imagine it's pretty immersive.

Also the photo features mainly young men, was taken in Slovenia so presumaly they've already passed through Turkey, Greece or Macedonia, Serbia, Hungary or Croatia.

If you make the assumption their refugees then they've already passed though a number of safe havens where they could have claimed asylum. (If the EU hadn't closed the internal borders leaving Greece to deal with it)

They're refugees until they've found somewhere that will accept them. And it's ridiculous to think the outer countries of Europe should take absolutely everyone. Especially when the central EU countries have had a part in bombing the fuck out of their country.

This is a normal post Is the correct answer :)
No matter how unpalatable it will be for our political overlords, and for the gung-ho elements of our populations who whooped along to the whole thing, we HAVE to accept some responsibility for the absolutely dire situation in the Middle East.
The entire region has been a strategic playground for global powers for nearly a fucking century. They have played countries, tribes, religions and societies agaianst each other for their own strategic ends. Who'd have thunk that the outcome would be a region-wide bloodbath eh?

The first country they landed at was Turkey. If Turkey's such a great "safe" country then why are people up in arms about the prospect of them joining the EU? Confusing eh?

The refugees (yes, refugees not "migrants", even if the correct terminology does make you feel uncomfortable) in the photo were trying to get to Germany, who at the time had said they were welcome.

This is a normal post Exactly
Which is exactly the point I was making. Someone suggested that the poor fuckers in the photo weren't refugees because they'd passed through the first "officially" safe country they'd landed in.
(, Fri 17 Jun 2016, 11:52, , Reply)
This is a normal post Was that me? I used the term "migrant" because it's neutral.
The BBC uses it also for that reason.

Also where that photo was taken they would have passed through at least 4 safe countries and could have claimed their rights of asylum under international law.

This is a normal post I've no problem with Turkey joining the EU. If it wasn't safe how come so many people go their on holiday?

(, Fri 17 Jun 2016, 11:51, , Reply)
This is a normal post We have a solution then
You can fuck off and live in Turkey which you clearly consider a veritable paradise, whilst the refugees escaping 6 years of bombardment, starvation, murder, rape, brutalisation and excruciating deprivation can pass through Turkey to more civilised societies in Europe. You won't have to live near refugees and I won't have to share the same air as you. Win win eh?

This is a normal post I know this sounds a little bit Dritten Reich...
...but can't we put them in camps in Lincolnshire and get them pedalling exercise bikes that are plugged into the national grid. That way they'd be singing for their supper, and we could make sure that the minority of rapists among them would be firmly under control.

This is a normal post Or, we could put ground troops into Syria and try and stabilise the region and bring an end to the sectarian violence?
You know, treat the cause, not the symptoms?

This is a normal post Fantastic idea!
Just like "troops on the ground" solved all the problems in Afghanistan and Iraq!

Christ, I wish I'd had such clarity of thought!

Oh, hang on a minute... Sorry... I've just realised a flaw in your masterplan... 13 years of military interventions might actually the root cause of the rise and consolidation of sectarian and extremist groups and ideologies. If only some people had raised this spectre 13 years ago eh?

Shit, I really thought you had the answer to all the world's problems there as well. HashtagSadFace

This is a normal post Ok, so what is the solution?
We just empty Syria, Iraq, Somalia, Eritrea, Sudan, Libya, Nigeria into Europe? We don't try and help fix things? We just turn a blind eye to the ill and infirm that aren't able to make the journey to escape?
(, Fri 17 Jun 2016, 12:10, , Reply)
This is a normal post The point is..
That its not a simple situation with a simple answer. In fact, the whole scenario is an absolute clusterfuck and will require a more nuanced response than either closing borders or sending in troops. However, we have a media and a majority of the population who want to portray the situation in the childish paradigm of goodies vs baddies.
The problem is, the people who we call baddies were goodies not too long ago and the goodies were baddies before that, and at some point soon we'll be calling THEM baddies again. Meanwhile, outside the Western geopolitical sphere, there are other players who are calling OUR goodies baddies!!!

What is very patently fucking obvious though to anyone with a modicum of intelligence, is that 13 years of military invention has made things a HELL of a lot worse.

This is a normal post Whilst the EU sat with its thumb up its arse Putin increased the numbers of refugees fleeing.
No side of the political debate has proposed anything that remotely sounds like trying to find a solution.

This is a normal post Another minor flaw in your plan...
Soooo, we have a refugee crisis because of an ongoing armed conflict in Syria, yes?

You suggest we ESCALATE the conflict by sending in foreign ground forces, yes?

I'm just wondering, do you think an escalation of the conflict will:

A) decrease the number of refugees

OR

B) increase the number of refugees

I know its a toughie, but if you rub your two brain cells together for a few minutes, I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out.

(I'm a nice guy so I'll give you a clue, the answer is "B")
(, Fri 17 Jun 2016, 12:11, , Reply)
This is a normal post Yes, there are only ever two possible outcomes in this digital world.
Clearing an area of hostile forces and having it under UN protection would in no way create a safe area for people to exist and build a life.

The problem we have is the world has lost its appetite to commit long term to anything and the complete mess of alliances and proxy wars means we are just turning a blind eye to the suffering unless it can make its own way to Calais.

This is a normal post Yes I thought that was going to be your angle
Ok so right now nobody knows why he murdered her and generally people on both sides of this bloody debate are respectfully not using her death for political gain.

However if you want to go on assumptions let's see what we currently assume.

1) He shouted something like "Britain first"
2) Reports are he bought a book from a white supremisist group in 1999 that had instructions for making a pipe gun.
3) He was a member of the far right Springbok Club.
4) He's suffered with an unknown mental illness that he has recieved treatment for.

I'm failing to see how you can blame farage for her death.
Whilst it's certainly looking like he was very right wing in his views farage isn't the king of right wing people. You might as well say cameron has blood on his hands for starting this whole process. Or how about the Paul Golding the leader of "britain first". How wide are you going to spread the blame?
Everyone who's been calling to leave the EU? Because that's a lot of fucking people on all sides of the political spectrum.

Yes the boat thing might have been a trigger.

What are you suggesting, we ban all protests and counter protests because someone with a mental illness might finally snap seeing it on the telly?
