I liked the one about the guy who had invented a space sailing ship
it had a sail that was 250km high and 150 km wide. It can't be built on earth but maybe one day...one...day... New scientist is for people who need a new job - or have nobody to talk to at coffee break

And even that huge sail would still be phyisically impossible to fold in half more than seven times.
That fact fucks with my head. I'm always like "surely if they got a big enough, thin enough sheet of tissue...?". And then I remember physics. And then I cry.
(

are you allowed to use an iron?
if you ironed it after each fold can it still not be done? I would try - but I don't know how to work the iron /bloke
(

Thu 28 Jul 2005, 17:56,

Nah, it's to do with it becoming twice as thick and half as big each time*
which means it'll only fold seven times before some weird formula makes it too chubby and short to go over again. *a bit like consecutive inbreeding

actually today I got a funny email
An Israeli guy thought I was English until I told him I am german. His response: --> I see. $myname, yes that's a German name, especially with 2 n's. My mother's maiden name is Schwartz. :) OK, we're not generally too fond of Germans over here, but I'm sure you're one of the good ones. You at least had the sense to leave the place. I actually understand that it's geographically must prettier than England. I live in the mountains myself. We like that. :) <-- I think an email like that from me about some Israeli would get me into trouble.
