But I'd suggest that if you buy a few DVD's from the Corel Masters series and learn more about it as a tool you'll get more out of it and soon consider Photoshop to be very poor in comparison when it comes to actual painting. ( I love photoshop for illustration but nowadays I don't even consider it for painting or sketching ).
Horses for courses but there is a lot to discover in painter and the more you learn the better it gets.
Painter is as close as you are ever going to get to putting paint on canvas without the mess.

because I like the mess :) If I want to paint or sketch I paint and sketch and then use the scanner or the camera to get them into the machine. Personally thats what I like about the new versions of all these bits of graphic software, there are so many ways to do stuff. So we can go back to being artists and use the tools to create what we want rather than being defined by the tools.

..but B3TA is more about the ideas we come up with rather than a showcase for awesome art skills. I am sure people must get fed up with my numpty arty farty stuff filling up B3TA everyday. If filters help someone get that joke/message across then I say good luck to them, obviously if someone thinks just using a filter is something to be proud of, then of course they are a bit of a cunt.

I don't even have a problem with filters. I do, as you say, get the hump when somebody passes someone else's image through a few filters then posts it here in a new thread as if they have accomplished something.
I don't mind if people accuse me of using filters ( if you count the odd blur on layers and some texturing then I do use them ) as I know how much drawing and brushing I do on the old Wacom and I'm happy that I created something either from new or took a reference and put my take on it.
The thing with filters tat gets me is some people are happy to take a photo, click a filter and say 'look what I made' and that just makes me embarrassed for them. It is no accomplishment to know how to click a couple of tool buttons.

No mercy i think it were.. the initial release had a bug in it that would save you progress for so long.. but then wipe the file. most iritating it was.. but apparently they traded it in for one that worked for free, but I had sold it all before i found out about that.

It seems unlikely - it is saving the progress whilst the machine is on, but a 7 year old takes months to complete games, so that is of no use at all (I have no manual).

"That's the main problem with Over the Hedge on the GBA. After you've played through each type of level once, the novelty wears off. Unfortunately, you have to play through each chapter multiple times to collect all the food that's required to unlock subsequent chapters and eventually beat the game. Most people don't have the patience to tolerate that much tedium. The exception, of course, is really young children, who will likely be more receptive to the simplistic and repetitive nature of the levels than anyone over the age of eight will. "

"Navigating the menu is a bit difficult to comprehend at first, but once you realize the central forest area is a large hub with hollow logs leading off to the different levels and options menus, it makes a bit more sense, and actually is quite interesting."

make a human skin layer and set it to "difference transparency" and magic wand all the bits of skin from the bottom layer to the new raster layer we will call the skin layer.
the result is a creepy black woman.
copy the skin layer and paste onto a squirrel
select the bg layer of the squirrel and copy its fur.
Take that fur and make it a new layer on top of the skin layer.
call the new layer "over skin layer" and make it partially transparent.
finally make a third layer and whack on a squirrels head
edit : and don't forget to change the skin layer back to normal transparency and use clarify on it to make the light and shadow work a bit harder.
Thats as close to a tutorial as I can do

edit : Cheddar cheese was sometimes (and still can be found) packaged in black wax, but was more commonly packaged in larded cloth, impermeable to contaminants but still allowing the cheese to breathe, although this practice is now limited to Europe and to artisan cheese makers. In the United States, Cheddar cheese comes in several varieties, including mild, medium, sharp, extra sharp, New York Style, Colby/Longhorn, white, and Vermont. New York style Cheddar cheese is a particularly sharp Cheddar cheese, sometimes with a hint of smoke.
