just a little TJ (sorry!): some poor business man - late fifties, and a fairly large fellow, had obviously fallen arse over tit in oxford street (I didn't see that bit), and was now sitting in starbucks with one of those cycling paramedics, who was treating the HUGE bump on his head. I didn't have the nerve to go over to the guy to point out his flys were open and everyone could see...

It's a lovely little machine, and gives me a Unix system (which I need for work) without the arsing around and moronic compromises of Linux. I also love my iPod. My entire CD collection on one machine, in decent quality (once you replace those crappy headphones).
On the other hand, Apple are a horrible, horrible company, with business practices that would make Microsoft shudder with jealousy to observe. Plus, they make iTunes. And Safari.

It's all as MP3. My iPod won't last forever, and MP3's easily the most portable. I have a habit of ripping video to .mp4, but that's mainly laziness and the fact that they've always seemed to play fine on my Windows machine too.

As I understand it, it's just an MP4 container, with an "a" as a reminder that it's got audio content inside.

The compression is useless, it's impossible to encode it in a decent and specific way, such as you can with MP3. It's also horrendous to use on a Windows machine.
I fail to see why anyone would choose to use M4A over MP3 - there are absolutely zero benefits.

(I'm assuming we're really talking about AAC here, versus "MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3" aka MP3).
I'm only going on Wikipedia stuff here, but I thought AAC achieved better compression -- ie. better fidelity for a given bit-rate? And that where MP3 introduces very noticeable compression artefacts, AAC distortion is less noticeable? (Err, these two might even be the same thing, perhaps). I'm just going on what I've been told, not what I've heard :-)
"encode in a decent & specific way" -- is this saying that MP3 has more knobs to twiddle? Why would you want that? Answers might be: to generate a specific audio distortion effect; to allow extreme compression (with distortion) but giving you the choice of what part (of the spectrum, I guess?) gets distorted).
Why is AAC bad on Windows?
Sorry for all the questions -- if there's a site or previous discussion that covers this, feel free to just point me at it instead!
Ta!

It'll still cost a packet, but it'll be there.
If you add heaps of sugar to it and, I dunno, boil it for a bit, then it'll taste like Buckfast, at least.
I don't like Benedictine very much, though I did have a very nice day in Honfleur one time which included going around the abbey where they make the stuff.

But it has to be done. I'd buy it in Glasgow. You've not drunk Bucky if it's not in its natural environment. Fuck this Cornwall crap, Glasgow's where Bucky's at.
