"For the first time in almost two decades of UNEP's International Children’s Painting Competition, original artworks have been selected from nearly 200,000 entries for this exhibit and auction.

This unique collection gives insight into children's vision, fears and hopes for their future, and it provides a valuable chronicle of the environment as seen through the eyes of children.

These paintings are, in essence, the voices of the children calling out to the rest of society to unite, act and ensure their future on this planet."

This is a normal post 'this surveillance database is a fact'?
'proposed' legislation is how the article calls it, with lots of suggestions of what 'could' happen if it does indeed become a 'fact'
(, Wed 15 Oct 2008, 14:26, Reply)
This is a normal post Indeed
And the fact that the government would have the power (under certain circumstances) doesn't mean that it'll be exercised.

For the record, though I don't think that there's a right to privacy, I'm in no way a supporter of legislation like this. But if you're going to oppose it, at least get your facts right.
(, Wed 15 Oct 2008, 14:33, Reply)
This is a normal post Ooo interesting point
you don't think that there's a right to privacy.

I'd take the opposite view. Granted, I'm going on gut feeling on this, rather than having studied the implications for and against. But I think that the ability to carry on about your business without undue hindrance is of strong importance.

I'll also say that I'm strongly against this databasing, and other options that the gov are touting (ID Cards, incarceration without charge). Coming from Norn Irn, ID drivers licenses were introduced long before they started here, for the very same reasons, and did nothing to stop attacks on either side. Internment also pushed more people towards the violent extreme than it stopped. The grim reality is that if there are people who want to do something bad, no amount of preventative measures, will be 100% effective. You need to stop people from wanting to do the bad things, and that requires a more pragmatic approach.

So back to privacy. I'd be genuinely interested to know why you don't think that right exists. :)
(, Wed 15 Oct 2008, 15:56, Reply)
This is a normal post Well you don't expect us to THINK as well as read it do you!?

(, Wed 15 Oct 2008, 14:33, Reply)
This is a normal post Archibald...if the government..or any government 'propose' legislation for something it usually means that whatever they've 'proposed'..
..has already been put in place.

Bare in mind..

Counter-terrorism measures for a “Big Brother” giant database were first announced by Prime Minister Gordon Brown in February under the ‘Intercept Modernisation Programme'.

If you don't think this will happen then you're as crazy as a fox covered in ham.

Also the internet as we now know it will radically change. It will be heavily controlled and censored.

Shalom.
(, Wed 15 Oct 2008, 14:34, Reply)
This is a normal post as Enzyme rightfulyl points out above
If you're going to oppose something, at least get your facts right.
You can't claim the above as fact without 100% concrete proof and as yet, there is no proof of this actually happening now, only speculation based on an article you linked which quotes 'proposed' legislation.
It's bad enough that we live in a time when we can be fearful of our own Government at times, but for the opposers to also act as scaremongers quoting speculation as fact, it doesn't help their cause any either.
(, Wed 15 Oct 2008, 14:37, Reply)
This is a normal post You don't need proof when you have instincts. Like a fox.
Seriously though, I'm not sure what proof you want. A picture of where the database is?
A website address?

They announced this back in February;
www.number10.gov.uk/Page14490

Which means it's all ready to go. You're assuming that everything your government tells you is a fact.

Shalom.
(, Wed 15 Oct 2008, 14:41, Reply)
This is a normal post No, I'm not assuming everything I'm told is a fact
You've made that assumption without evidence, see how easy it is to do? I kind of made that point in my reply.
I'm just stating that you jumped from a linked article from the Mail which quotes 'proposed' legislation to a statement which implied that this was bona fide fact - when the evidence at hand suggests that it has yet to be determined - hence the very careful use of the words in the mail article of 'proposed', 'could' and other terms which suggest what 'may' happen should it come in.
it's the use of language, arbitrarily throwing out the words 'truth' and 'fact' when they are used based upon speculation that really gets on my goat. It doesn't help the opposers cause either.

This is a normal post I omitted the fact that I've read about this 'PROPOSED' database over a year ago.
Much like alot of things I whack on /links, they've been a long time coming.

I'm not making giant leaps here based on a Daily Fail article.
(, Wed 15 Oct 2008, 14:48, Reply)
This is a normal post Well this we didn't know, y'see
when all you give us is a Daily Fail article and start quoting it as fact - in contradiction to what the article actually says - without the back up, it gives the impression of being a bit 'scare-mongering' if you catch my drift.

This is a normal post Oh I understand completely.
I often assume that maybe there's a small number of people who have been following all this stuff over the last few years.
(, Wed 15 Oct 2008, 14:53, Reply)
This is a normal post If some of the opposers to Goverments didn't arbitrarily throw around words like 'truth' and 'fact'
with little to no evidence in many, many. many internet articles and arguments, I'm sure there would be more than a small number of people. :D
I'm quite open to a lot of this collective 'stuff' (for want of a better word) but I like to break it down using rational explantion, and actually seeing evidence to back up the words 'truth' and 'fact' when used.

It's a bugbear of mine (bordering on OCD) on the mis-use of the word 'truth' on the internet these days. It's often just an opinion, based upon other internet information.
(, Wed 15 Oct 2008, 14:57, Reply)
This is a normal post Oh, I get what you're saying.
You shouldn't believe ANYTHING without facts and evidence.

Sometimes this evidence has come cumulatively, so trying to proof something to someone who doesn't have that cumulative knowledge is near impossible.

Semantics? I'd like some antics.
:D

Laters.

This is a normal post Well, history for one thing.
I don't have the time to got through every 'proposed' piece of legislation, when it was announced and when it became a fact.

Boba Fett's voice in The Empire Strikes Back was originally provided by Jason Wingreen.

For the DVD 'Special Edition' release, all of his lines were shittily re-recorded by Prequel Jango Fett actor Temuera Morrison.

This is a normal post Aye, t'was what I was referring to.
Same voice, what with him being a clone and all (Special Editions-wise).

Still hate that they re-recorded Fett's lines.

This is a normal post I'd forgotten it had been redubbed in the DVD release.

Someone should have taken an injunction agaist George Lucas altering the films anymore destroying our cherished memories.
