This is a link post Can I have a ranty EU thread? Go on, i've been ever so good.
The EU president has sent a nice letter to putin congratulating him on his "election".

Undermining the lukewarm support the UK has gotten from European nations.

The Twatter comments are most amusing

www.cps.gov.uk/legal-guidance/racist-and-religious-crime-cps-prosecution-policy is very helpful here. It defines a racist or religious crime as:

"there is evidence that the accused person demonstrated hostility, or was motivated by hostility towards the victim because of the victim's membership of a racial or religious group."

And further goes on to define a racial group as:

"Racial group - this means any group of people who are defined by reference to their race, colour, nationality (including citizenship) or ethnic or national origin. This could include Gypsies and Travellers, refugees, or asylum seekers or others from less visible minorities. There has been a legal ruling that Jews and Sikhs are included in the definition of racial group."

How about when Putin, who funded it to weaken the EU and NATO, starts blatantly provoking the west, specifically the country he just paid to weaken, and they respond in such a way that he can validate military action?

I am reminded of foreign policy as described by Bill Hicks using a fictional recount of Jack Palance in the movie Shane, throwing the pistol at the sheep herder's feet: "Pick it up."

"I don't wanna pick it up mister, you'll shoot me."

"Pick up the gun."

"Mister, I don't want no trouble, huh. I just came down town here to get some hard rock candy for my kids, some gingham for my wife. I don't even know what gingham is, but she goes through about 10 rolls a week of that stuff. I ain't looking for no trouble, mister."

"Pick up the gun."

Boom, boom.

"You all saw him. He had a gun."

In this example, Putin is Jack Palance and the UK is the homesteader who is about to point a gun at Palance.

In fact the UK state appears to have been appeasing putins actions here for some time. The use of a military nerve agent must have just been too big to cover up as a suicide.

It was originally being spun by the state as fentanyl poisoning.
Might have stayed that way until a police responder got it too and they had to decontaminate half of Salisbury.

when an entity blatantly more capable of dealing with any conflict is trying to force one, the only proper way through is to not rise to their blatant baiting.

Of course with all the right wing shit rags bleating about traitors, sovereignty, and nationalism, it will be difficult for the PM to justify doing so even though it is important that they do not rise to the bait.

EDIT : and if you read the tweet that started this whole conversation, Junkers mentions security TWICE in it.

These people know what they are saying and they dog whistle it to each other all the time. They know Putin is trying to weaken the EU and NATO and they are telling him they will be trying to stop that.

"relations between the #EU and #Russia are crucial to the #security of our continent. Our objective should be to re-establish a cooperative pan-European security order."

Which to me sounds like they take the killings seriously, so seriously they will not twattersplat about them, unlike a certain American president...

In order to counter that sort of narrative you disrupt it by extending an offer of friendship, break the cycle of aggression or at least expose Putin as the primary aggressor perhaps emboldening opposition elements within Russia, because that's the only way he will fall. Expose his paranoia as false and Russia's enemies as potential friends

I am not sure at this point it matters what the EU does. The damage is done. Putin is a strategic master and we rowing in circles over Brexit, the US is in self destruct and the EU is contemplateing life without one of the two net contributors.

Controlling borders which allows the UK to restrict the population. At present our services are struggling both locally and nationally as the infrastructure that existed to cope with 55 million people now has to cope with 75. Everyone here is aware in one way or another of these systems struggling under the weight of population - NHS including the wait for GP appointments, the deep cuts made in local authorities which have removed minority support for disabled as well as the usual suspects such as arts and libraries, the benefits system which is being saved from collapse by destructive policies such as paying less rent to under 35s and benefit capping. These are often cheered as being good policies but they hurt the vulnerable. Brexit is not just for idiot racists who thought that all non-UK residents would be shoved out the door but a sensible move away from overpopulation.

This is about overpopulation. This is a normal post I also didn't say it was nothing to do with EU immigrants
You must read more carefully. I said "as such" or "per se". This means that it isn't the direct issue. The problem is too many people in the UK and Brexit gives us the border control. Simple. No need to mention immigration at all because that is too narrow a viewpoint. It seems to be a remainer trick to bring everything round to these trigger points but this is not a hatred of immigrants I'm afraid but just simple economics.

An old colleague of mine now has a job crunching this data. He says if they want they can tell exactly what appliances have been on and when (unique signature or something). Sinister but no real application yet, but you can see how it could be worked into extra charges e.g. using the dryer when its sunny outside.
(, Tue 20 Mar 2018, 8:55, , Reply)
This is a normal post Which is precisely why I don’t want one fitted.
They can be used to collect a shitload of data on customers with no clarity regarding the purposes to which that can be put, good or evil. Their only legitimate use should be to supplant regular meter readings on a like-for-like basis, but even that argument falls apart when you realise that a meter reading is also a meter inspection for safety or tampering.

This is a normal post The last company I worked at made micro combined heat and power boilers that generated electricity whilst providing heating and hot water
We started our own energy supply company through which to market it. I was managing the electronics and controls team so I was dragged into lots of crap on smart meters because the ESCo side of the business has an obligation to install them before 2020.

The whole legislative side is a mess as you'd expect with any technology that the government gets involved with, but the data doesn't go to the utilities directly. It goes to the DCC, government appointed company, who are supposed the meta-ise the data before it goes to utilities so they can't work out when you are drying your pants and all that privacy related stuff. What stops leaks of your data from DCC though? I'd take a guess at a wafer thin IT policy.

The energy saving aspects at the moment are nonsense. The in home display is supposed to motivate you to switch things off. Studies have shown it has a MTKD of 2 weeks (mean-time to kitchen drawer - the metric of which all "amazing great smart technologies" are judged by the cynical engineers that work on them). But eventually they could be useful. The UK electricity grid is a creaking mess. I'm working with one on the DNOs at the moment (UK grid is split into 6 regions managed by local district network operators) who have told us if four households in every street bought an electric car their part of the grid would fall over. There just isn't the capacity. So smart meters are a way in the future for utilities to dispatch none-critical loads at peak times which reduces strain on the network, allows for a greater proportion of renewable generation, reduces pollution (CO2 per kWh is not linear, the carbon footprint is proportionally more at peak times as the system losses of transmission rise) and could lead to better customer tariffs if you allow them to schedule when your dishwasher/tumble drier operates.

So ultimately could be good, but currently it's a fucking mess. The health concerns are no greater than you'd have for your wifi router.

Tl;dr - I WORK IN THE INDUSTRY.

It's like the idea in the future no one will own cars and we will just dial up an autonomous vehicle when we need it. People don't like giving up convenience and decision making.

Having seen the wizard behind the curtain though it's quite alarming how ill prepared the grid is for the future.

Which is hard to imagine.

BBC struggle to do political satire, and may as well stick to the more intellectual stuff like QI.

"Last leg" on C4 is best you can get these days.
