I've been asked to attend an event to give evidence to civil servants to support this.
I'd like to mention some examples from B3ta. So have YOU had anything shut down over copyright?

For a Simpsomaker Flash thing I made many moons ago. They told me to remove it from my website or face the consequences. I did this for a month or two, but I later found out that they were so angry because I had made a Simpsons avatar creator (made by me in 2 evenings after work) and released it before they released their mega-polished simpsons avatar creator to coincide with the release of the Simpsons movie. So I put a "This is a fan-based flash and in no way associated, blah, blah" on the front and put it back on my site: www.q4nobody.co.uk/simpsomaker.html Heard nothing since, so I made a version with music for Newgrounds: www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/390034

Pukka Pies asked me to stop selling T Shirts that used one of their posters - it was more of a tribute that an parody.
DC thompson asked me to take some Oor Wullie parodies down from my website, not because they were parodies per se but because they were utter filth.
To be honest though, I thought it was fair enough in both cases.

Mostly because of use of copyrighted music. I also used to be in a double act called Whyte & Mackay who wrote to us telling us to stop using their logo on our advertising material. However, they did add that they thought our stuff was funny, so no blood was drawn.

regarding those other guys I couldn't say, but if they american then they are covered by their own fair use copyright law and if they are very successful they probably have the backing of production companies that can deal directly with youtube. A lady emailed us (probably came via our Top Tips pages) saying it was disgusting what we did and we should remove it. We paid no attention until a couple of days later Jordan's people emailed us and threatened legal action unless we took it off the blog. Because I did so the civil servants are now just doing their job of getting interested parties in to talk about it.
Although it's not generally shouted about from the roof tops (and it should be) this is part of the democratic process. Governments think up policy. Interested parties chip in (including you or me should we present ourselves with something relevant to issue) then it's voted upon to be made law.

Perhaps more interestingly, to get around this issue I started to sing the songs myself, only to find I was STILL in trouble because people had copyrighted the arrangement! They don't ban them but they get the advert revenue, which I suppose is fair enough.
I did have mails from Willie Nelson, Marillion and Jona Lewie all saying they didn't mind at all, and Willie Nelson even put my video on the front page of his site.

with nice words (like 'hug' and 'nice party'). It would replace links so every article you clicked would be equally jolly and it was called 'BBC Fluffy News', I posted it here many many many years ago. I very quickly had an email from an editor on the BBC News website instructing me to take it down. This was such a long time ago I have no pictures, names nor emails, but I thought it might be interesting as it involves the BBC.
Ignoring the issue of copyright (which *was* the reason they gave), I do think it ran the risk of being rather offensive, so maybe they didn't want to be involved in that. HTH.

But copyright? Abuse of the takedown system, no contest.
I think this is a fantastic example of why parody should explicitly be permitted.
Also consider: Pingu's THE THING is a pretty small production, but stuff like Robot Chicken and Family Guy would also be eligible and deserving of explicit protection.

..from Amiright.com - one of over a thousand I've written. Amiright, a US-hosted website, received a cease and desist notice from Warner Chappell, a US company, to take down the parody based on British law.
We caved to the pressure because even though there was not a hope in hell of WC (now there's an appropriate pair of initials if ever there was one) winning, it would have cost both me and the chap who runs amiright time and money (both of which are in very short supply).
The parody was a Noel Coward one - "Don't Let's Be Beastly To The Muslims", and led to another parody to the same song "Don't Let's Be Beasts To Warner Chappell".
I've written to ask at least a dozen copyright owners of songs I want to parody, nearly all of which didn't even bother replying.. so technically my first CD is largely copyright infringements. So I haven't sold many (sigh).
I've also had many a parody submission turned down by shows such as Bremner, Bird and Fortune for permission reasons rather than quality ones - Disney, for example, as a copyright holder never seem to give permission for their songs to be parodied (which is a shame, because they're such great parody material).
