# Professor Fnord...
Just a small point, but, all of the games-console manufacturers are selling their machines at a loss. The idea is to get the consumer to buy-in to the company's product and then they have to buy the games for it, money is made out of developers and publishers having to go through Sony, for example, before they release a game for the PlayStation; and then there's all the money from first-party titles and licences. Rant over, back to essay and BrothomStates!

We're trusting a source called The Enquirer? Like, as in the National Enquirer, repository of all truth in american journalism?

Oh, puh-leeze!

Edit: Ok, it's spelled differently - but even so; look at the bottom of that page, it says xboxes got sold at discount before christmas... I didn't see any, and I was looking for a new doorstop too!

that they never sold as well as other platforms, so they need to work harder to keep the Gamecube in the marketplace?

# I think the most I paid for an N64 game was 80 quid
for ISS 64 when it was first released. But that was still cheaper than Samba de Amigo, and Steel Battallion is going to make a serious dent in my wallet.

I tried playing it in a video store and it was ridiculous. i never understand why they make you guys pay so much more for your games.
(, Tue 21 Jan 2003, 23:54, archived)
# Already got it on pre-order.
It looks like it is going to be an absolutely top game, and there is already a sequel in development which will use the same controller, so spread over the cost of two games it won`t be too bad.
(, Tue 21 Jan 2003, 23:56, archived)
# I guess
but i've learned that add-ons never sell or catch on. especially if they're $200 and that's US. I can't imagine what it would be to get one in the UK.

new_matt's theory of games machine failure™

big control pad = doomed to failure
small pad = runaway success

snes, dreamcast = good machin, too big pad, doomed
playstation = small pad therefore a winner

xbox. launched with hyuuuuge pad. was filing. introduced small "japanese" pad, picking up.

SNES wasn't a failure. Did you mean N64?

# But that doesn't explain
why the dreamcast is still popular, while I know less people with XBoxes than I knew with Saturns - and I knew no-one with a Saturn.

Saturns are the reason the Dreamcast failed IMO.

...just when the dreamcast should have been cleaning up.

(, Tue 21 Jan 2003, 23:28, archived)
# Dreamcast suffered bad timing
if they'd held it back so it could use DVDs, it would have really had a chance...

Whenever I saw a Saturn running anything, it looked only marginally better than a SNES, which considering it was (at the time) "next gen" really put me off... So naturally when the DC came along I (along with many others, by the looks of history) was put off by bad memories. Lack of a DVD version was just an extra nail in it's coffin, when the PS2 made (and kept) a lot of promises... not all of them, but enough to keep the punters interested.
(, Tue 21 Jan 2003, 23:34, archived)
# I love my Saturn....
got it for a couple of quid at a boot sale, it was *wow*r@re*boxed* and came with both Daytona and Need For Speed...sorted. 'Course, I own a computer museum so I needed one anyway, but those games are great, and cheap!

# The Saturn was bad hardware, but had some excellent games.
It just got mulched by the might of Sony's effective marketing.

# It was not so much bad hardware per se,
but the design meant that it was incredibly difficult to program for. Sega's attempt to give it decent 3D power by throwing in a second SH2 meant that the hardware was incredibly difficult to program effectively, but when people got it right there were some top games. Ideally it should never have been marketed as a 3D console as it throws 2D stuff around with ease, witness the Capcom fighters or Radiant Silvergun.

but as a bit of tech it was a wonderful bit of kit. Sega didn`t so much screw up with the Dreamcast, but people had long memories about their failures with the Saturn.

# Whilst googling found this
Clicky for Map of minorities in america
I was wondering even if a group is a minority over an entire country
is it really right to call them a minority if they take up 97.6% of the population of an area
as clearly atleast one of the areas does

# some are clearly transparent
and clearly these see through people are the majority
(, Tue 21 Jan 2003, 23:16, archived)
# Yes, in proportion to the population of the country they are still a minority
A black man in a chair would compromise 100% population of the chair, but still be a minority in this country.

But I study Politics.
Bit of a misleading map as the two main ethnic minorities in America, ie the blacks and the hispanics are unrelated culturally and geographically, so lumping them together proves nothing useful
(, Tue 21 Jan 2003, 23:17, archived)
# no i was actually looking for a serious answer
i was just a wondering
and thought id share
it proves you can make a nice band across the bottom of america
pretty much their only border
reminds me of south park the film with chefs regiment
(, Tue 21 Jan 2003, 23:22, archived)
# The number of 'minorities' in the south
is more to do with black people, as that is where they worked as slaves in the last century on the cotton plantations etc. they haven't totally dispersed throughout america yet. The Hispanics are generally a more recent phenomenon, and are more widespread, but principally in California, where demand for cheap labour is high, and Mexicans illegaly enter the country to work there.
