Like an episode of Father Ted that never was.

The comments are justifyably angry, and completely insane:
Sueklos: "Why on God's earth when there are so many sick people being locked up for rape, murder, terrorism, muggings, stabbings and the like can't we use them for experiments. It would free up space in overcrowded prisons and do the world a favour"
( , Wed 25 Jul 2012, 10:24, Reply)

I've been trying to explain the facts of this to people, as the vast majority of them feel that their knowing absolutely bugger-all should be no impediment to loudly proclaiming that the scientists performing this research do not know what they're doing.
Ethical issues aside, the response to comments like that is that the experiments have to be performed on young animals whose visual systems are still developing. If you were doing it to humans it would have to be done on young children.

( , Wed 25 Jul 2012, 10:47, Reply)

I work in an area related to this (though I don't do any experiments on animals). These experiments have been going on for decades. When Colin Blakemore took a stand on animal research in the 80s he was being persecuted for carrying out the precursors to these experiments.
( , Wed 25 Jul 2012, 12:29, Reply)

I don't understand this. The scientists who perform these experiments actually do them in order to publish the results. How has the BUAV "uncovered evidence"? Do they mean that they look at articles which are published and see when people talk about testing on animals? It's hardly a secret.
