I hate super hero comics too, and super hero anything, because it is such a childishly shit idea pretending to be a grown up one, and endlessly repeated. You don't have to go and see them, but that doesn't stop them being everywhere, constantly reminding you that you live in a world full of idiots.
To my mind this is the best "super hero" film ever made:

Whilst "you don't have to go and see them", Hollywood seems to want to make very little else. Most times I've fancied going to the cinema in the last year, there's been nothing on to tempt me.
I did fancy that Birdman thing, but a really pretentious guy from the office said it was the best film he's seen in ages, so I decided it's probably wank.

terrific performances from all cast members, thoroughly recommended.
But if you don't like actory stuff and want muscle men shooting bad guys it's not for you.

I understand the stage comparison as there is the very defined sense of space it's all taking place in and has a ring of Mamet or Dogville to it in that way. I just don't think it was pulled off in a way that felt satisfying to view.
Did anyone else really struggle to hear the early dialogue too? Maybe that was the fault of the cinema I viewed it in and not the film itself.

Michael Keaton plays an ageing actor trying to make a credible stage show in the face of being best known for comic book movie "Birdman" 30 years ago.

Why would a studio bother taking a risk with an unknown new film, when they can endlessly "reboot" the same tedious bilge that they know will get a certain revenue upon release?

Cinema releases are the same as the charts, if you're under 20 you probably enjoy most of it, the older you get the more you have to look to other channels for what you want. Luckily we have DVD, VOD, art house cinemas etc

Ok, The Babadook, that was the Australian directors first full length film, how did superheroes affect that?
I think blockbusters (be they comics, cars that turn in to robots, doomed cruise liners, blue aliens etc) are a separate aspect of films, like XFactor isn't ALL tv. Wanting more multiplexes to show obscure films is like wanting a new Chris Morris show to be on ITV at 6.30 on a Saturday night.

I thought I would like the (first) Avengers film (saw it last Xmas on TV) because it had good reviews, but I was bored at the end because there was no suspense / jeopardy (or whatever it is that tricks you in to thinking that Doc might not put that plug back in time at the end of BTTF, even though you've seen the film dozens of times)
(, Tue 24 Feb 2015, 13:02, Reply)
Most modern major films are shit for the same reason - they are aimed at teenage boys and become generic as few people are rilling to gamble on something new. Super hero ones are in fashion, so you get loads.
There are intelligent super hero comics, but they don't tend to get turned into films in favour of the generic fluff that has been proven to work. Unlikely they'd make Red Son, for example. Or even a fun Bizarro one.
Comics are better, anyway.

(, Tue 24 Feb 2015, 11:49, Reply)
First, it's probably much more fun to make a spoof of some gritty show, than churning out some more saccharine kids crap. Also, it's an easier idea to come up with... "Why don't we Sesame Street-ize X this week?" where X can be literally anything.
Also, consider the parents. If they're watching a bit of telly with their kids, they're much more likely to enjoy something like this. For parents who care, and limit their kids TV watching, this is the kind of thing that puts a show on the allowed-viewing list.

He's been an ineffectual president because he's been divisive. His fans will tell you that the division is because of his skin colour. Bollocks. Just listen to his lame and stilted public speaking. He seemed to have the gift of the gab before he became potus, but I can smoke a cigarette during his interminable pauses now, like twenty or more if he speaks for more than five minutes. It's like he doesn't even know what he thinks he wants to say. Vote Troll.

But, now that's being run out by the whining classes as someone being mean to the president. Spastics.

I'm just so bored of him and his non achievement. "Oh but he's been hampered by the Senate" they whine. Like he's the first ever president to face a hostile senate. His record on Guantanamo and drones is frankly disgusting, and everybody loves him except when the whole NSA/Snowden/Internet freedom shit comes up. I'll cut him some slack when it comes to his failed healthcare reforms, but the rest of those things I mention, unmitigated failure. Oh, I nearly forgot, "I could've been Trayvon" really? No, you couldn't have been, even if you did allude to sticking coke up your nose once or twice at college, you were no fucking Trayvon Martin. And given your former relaxed attitude to drugs, why are you happy to continue to make people felons, actual fucking felons, for possession of less than half a gram of coke? I'll tell you why. Because you're a cunt.

the "minority party" can block things from passing and it is difficult to get through that block. During Bush 2's first term there was actual cooperation between the parties, even after he blew everything up! Not saying it was the best congress ever, but laws did get passed. Many fewer have gotten passed during Obama's time - but most of the bills that were presented to him were junk bills anyway.
However, I am not going to argue much about this - at the federal level it is crazy, but at the state house level it is damn near insane!
