If I want to make an image a real size (i.e. 3" * 4") what dpi should I use?
(, Mon 30 Oct 2006, 19:39, archived)
# what do you want to do with it?
(, Mon 30 Oct 2006, 19:40, archived)
# I want to make some brass plaques 3" * 4"
I need them to come out at that size when I feed the images into the engraver - it'll be 12 plaques laid out in a 1' square sheet of pre-polished brass, allowing 2mm for the width of the outlining tool.
(, Mon 30 Oct 2006, 19:43, archived)
# Well the question you will need to ask is, what DPI does the engraving machine require?
I would probably assume you wouldn't want much more than 75 - 100 dpi for that, since it's hardly high resolution stuff..
(, Mon 30 Oct 2006, 19:58, archived)
# hahahahahahah
I hear that so often and it hurts so much

a 3x4 image at 300 Dpi is 900x1200 pixels
a 3x4 image at 400 Dpi is 1200x1600 pixels

The Dpi is only relevent for printing it off at a higher quality.
(, Mon 30 Oct 2006, 19:40, archived)
# Thank you -
I want it to look tidy at 3" * 4" when I feed it into the engraver.

In my experience telling an image to be a certain size in tatty shop has no bearing on the size it comes out.
(, Mon 30 Oct 2006, 19:42, archived)
# thats because you are probably printing it
with a "fit to page" setting or just a printer that isn;t as compatible as it should be.
(, Mon 30 Oct 2006, 19:44, archived)
# Right.
I want a final physical thing which is 3" * 4"

How can I make that?
(, Mon 30 Oct 2006, 19:45, archived)
# by finding the settings for the printer
that make it print at the size of the package.
(Print Options under File in most packages)

Chances are you'll need to do a few test prints, measuring the results with a ruler to be sure.

But 300Dpi should do you for that size.
