# Needs 100% more kittens - however it illustrates a point

Though these words are regularly attributed to Voltaire, they were first used by Evelyn Beatrice Hall, writing under the pseudonym of Stephen G Tallentyre in The Friends of Voltaire (1906), as a summation of Voltaire's beliefs on freedom of thought and expression.
(, Wed 21 Oct 2009, 17:00, archived)
# not a very good point though.
(, Wed 21 Oct 2009, 17:01, archived)
# Well I believe in freedom of speech as a universal commodity for all
but the point is some people don't.
(, Wed 21 Oct 2009, 17:03, archived)
# I think the reason why this is such a tricky subject
is that I don't think freedom of speech IS a universal right.

For example, carried to its conclusion, I don't think anyone would agree with a banner being marched under which read "Kill All N*****s"

The problem is being able to find the balance between what is someone's right to express and what is wrong, usually involving the word "offence" which is a very woolly word, I think.
(, Wed 21 Oct 2009, 17:13, archived)
# Words can never kill only actions based on words
so in some respect if you dissect words from actions you can express Freedom of Speech as a Universal commodity - However we all know actions and words are not so easily seperated and Dialectics is often diverted from the pursuit of the truth to the perversion of the truth via propaganda.

wouldn't defend a Nazi's right to do whatever they like, including inciting racial hatred.
But their right to say anything? I could gag them and prevent them from expressing a viewpoint, but...that's what Nazis do, isn't it?

edit: ah, I see that's what you are, in fact, saying...

# Precisely which is what I'm trying to express
we allow all the Freedom of Speech, the Fascist use it as way to bind us in our own morality. Yes it's always a tricky thing where do you draw a line before they do?

# Defending the right to speak is not the same as defending the action
There is no contradiction in defending someones right to spout filth
and at the same time resisting and preventing any attempt they make at
committing the despicable acts they want to do.
Silencing the opposition is one such despicable act that the Nazis and
the like usually want to do.

If you silence someone to promote your view; you can't complain when
someone silences you to promote their view.

# Everyone is entitled to medical care regardless of race, colour or creed
that i do agree with. but positive discrimination is a load of racist bollocks.

it may have been a glitch, or not. i don't know. it just seemed wrong at the time. and this is just conjecture, but if a 'glitch' caused an ethnic to get queue-jumped in this manner, trevor phillips would have been slapping everybody with the race relations act and demanding compo for all involved.
(, Wed 21 Oct 2009, 16:40, archived)
# My major issue is with your use of the term "ethnics"
What you really ought to be typing is people, people were seen before your heavily pregnant missus.
Isn't saying ethinics quite a discriminatory term, I've always thought, when it's used in this context, that it's as bad as saying wogs, chinkys,
darkies, pakis, or something akin to that level of ignorant casual racism.
I understand that you might have been upset at not being seen very quickly, but having not long had a baby (well actually it was my girlfriend)
I know that Hospitals can be extremely tedious and irritating places, but there's a lot more going on behind the scenes than you see from the waiting room.

Hope all is well with you and yours anyhow.
