# I'd like to clear something up...
My house mate (Damocles) reckons the shark from the helicopter/shark series is called MeMe (as in mimi). I think you lot refer to any long-standing character such as No Hands, Fear etc as meme's, as in the psychological term for that kind of thing. Who's right?
(, Wed 2 Apr 2003, 16:05, archived)
# you

# Meeeeeeeeeem
Not me-me. Silly chicken.

# meeem is the pronounciation
and yes it is to do with memetics and Richard Dawkin's definition of the word 'meme'

# the shark is from
the National Geographic and a famost wildlife photographer took the picture - nothing to do with mimi or meme.

The fear or nohands arn't really memes at all. Memes are cultural genes - e.g. aspects of society that are the building blocks of it.

so both wrong really as nohands & the shark helecopter can only be descibed as memes in a b3ta sense not strictly anything more.
(, Wed 2 Apr 2003, 16:10, archived)
#
"A meme is a unit of information in a mind whose existence influences events
such that more copies of itself get created in other minds."
So really memes are both carriers of information and creators of behaviour.
(, Wed 2 Apr 2003, 16:12, archived)
# ok thats closer
but i'm still right that these meems are not true meems as they are only in the b3ta world as it were.

(and strictly speaking they arn't at all by that definition)
(, Wed 2 Apr 2003, 16:15, archived)
# Yeah I was quoting that from a memetics website
but they also said there was no absolute definition of a meme so it depends how you see it.

I like the looks of that, I'll do the same, or tell everyone about it, etc.

It's the kind of comedy you'd find on Comedy Lab on C4. BBC are pretty specific about what they want comedywise, check out the Commissioning section on their website and watch some 'BBC flavoured' comedy.
(, Wed 2 Apr 2003, 16:06, archived)
# i'd much rather get into radio comedy
saying that, i don't listen to it all that much. never know when its on.

# Yeah, I know what you mean....
...and it's a bit touch and go quality wise too....
(, Wed 2 Apr 2003, 16:14, archived)
# yeah
i have heard some of those radio 2 panel things they have, some of those are quite good. but apparantly radio 4 is brimming its nuts off with comedy. see, i pride myself (if only because i watch a ridiculous amount of tv) on being one of the select few who watch tv programmes before they get really popular and crap (eg ali g when he was on the 11 o'clock show, when bo selecta was just E4 shorts, and when dom joly was on the comedy lab) but then i hear about Partridge being on the radio? what? chris morris had Jam on radio 1?

and i feel left out...
(, Wed 2 Apr 2003, 16:19, archived)
# Also...
...Comedy Lab is very experimental and appeals to very narrow and varying groups. People who've got stuff on aren't usually asked to do more of the same (though Joly was) - they might be commissioned to do something for someone else based on the fact that they've got something made.

BBC want broader stuff that'll appeal to more people. You're around 18-20?
(, Wed 2 Apr 2003, 16:18, archived)
# just turned 20

# I agree...
...it is generally pretty shite. But they know what they want and aren't terribly flexible...don't know too much about how Comedy Lab stuff is commissioned, why don't you find out and try to target them?
(, Wed 2 Apr 2003, 16:24, archived)
# its all part of my "Apply Yourself You Lazy Bastard" Season

# I liked
the third one....it had mention of a labrador named Shatner.

Not sure about the other two, I'm afraid - the first didn't ring my bell, and the second has a dark Jam type subject, but doesn't seem to have conviction.

# its the lure of free alcohol.
And I always wonder.

For instance, last month I got something I thought was spam. It was to do with getting a refund on my monthly tube ticket. I thought it couldnt possibly be real, as the amount I would get refunded was more than the outlay for my tickets.

Everyone else in the office who got has £120 in their back pocket now, and will get more next month.

Ceci est un canular totalement indépendant de notre volonté, et dont nous ne sommes bien évidemment pas l'auteur.

Nous avons alerté les services de la répression des fraudes français.

Bien à vous,

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin

ALARM! chains e-mail
Currently Circulates on the Net a promotional operation concerning the free offer of a case of 6 champagne bottles Veuve Clicquot.
This is a hoax completely independent of our will, and of which we are obviously not the author.

We alerted the Fraud Squads French.

Yours sincerely,

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin

**Or, via german, portugese, and spanish:**

TO ALARM!
The chains of the email to momentarily work it in the network that an operation of the propaganda with respect to supplies exempts of verwitwete Champán Clicquot of the bottles of drawer 6.

This one is totally independent of our will to cannular, and of which we are not obvious the author.

We alarmed the French services of the persecution of the fraud.

Well in you,

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin
