the problem with it is
on straight lines (i.e. flat along x/y axis) there's no need for it, yet it's still applied, making the line look blurry.

It's a technique to remove pixellisation on lines
typically curves or diagonal lines on screen. In the example of a black line on white background, instead of each pixel being either white or black, some different shades of grey will be used to stop the 'step' effect you get otherwise.
