That's all it's about, not the minority hipster side of it, which I agree is a bit weird, like obsessive SF fans who wank over ray guns. Having said that, I haven't used windoze in 5 years; how long do you get between having to switch it off and on again these days?

But you are talking about the operating system, not the hardware. I have not ran windows in years, either, but I dont need to buy overpriced hardware because its the 'cool' thing to do. (the cool comment, is not aimed specifically at you, just the general apple fanboys, I seem to meet on regular basis) My largest problem with apple is the price of the hardware, as to the OS I would always default to Linux regardless of hardware, but when I look at the stuff inside a Mac Mini (the newest thing I have pulled apart) and compare the hardware to PC hardware I am always dumbfounded. Jonathan Ive did design some great good looking stuff though, but for me I would rather have a better system that looked bog standard than a ok spec box that looks fantastic.

That's true,
I was talking about the OS not the hardware (though now you mention it the stuff I've used runs fine anyways). I didn't buy the stuff because it was "cool", I just wanted something that didn't keep freezing/crashing. Edit: but the OS is a darn sight nicer to use too :)

I use Linux too :D
for the serious computery stuff* that is. It's unfortunately still not very good for anything media-ish like playing/editing movies, drawing packages etc etc. I always thought of apple OS as like the best of both worlds, as media-savvy as windows but as stable and able to do (some at least) serious computer stuff as Linux. * (edit) that you wouldn't use windows for anyway
(
Ysol ab abl blap ,
Thu 6 Oct 2011, 16:33,

I always ask people what they want when anything to do with an OS comes up. If they want gaming, then windows is the only answer. If they are not interested in gaming then give the alternatives a shot. People are often suprised. I still disagree with apples pricing scheme though, but they are in business and whilst people are willing to pay it then why change.

it must have been the shit that you have loaded on it.
my pc at my old work (over 5 years ago) was on all the time, i did turn it off for weeks end some times, but i think it had a continuous up time of about 3 months at one time. OS-X is different to use then windows in certain parts i grant you, but both have pluses and minuses in the user experience and both are based on Xerox's desktop environment.

i agree, it's stupidly expensive
but i have to say, i have owned a macbook pro for all of 18 months and used it pretty much all day every day. I expect to get another couple of years out of it. so maybe 1000+ full days of use. For argument's sake, say it cost £400 over the odds. That's 40p per day to have something really nice to use that never goes wrong. I spend 6 times that on a coffee in the morning that lasts me 5 minutes.
