This is a normal post Carousels could be used in certain situations.
I think, like most web things, they are used for the sake of using them and used incorrectly. Much like every company "needs" an app.

This is a good take on how a carousel could be used uxmovement.com/navigation/why-users-arent-clicking-your-home-page-carousel/

This is a normal post Yes probably bollocks.
Personally I don't use them (bar 1 site that I'm ordered to by those above). Like I said below they make sense for a photo site as a slide show but not much else. BUT EVERYONE MUST HAVE ONE!!!!

This is a normal post Bootstrap seems to be slowly taking over from the homepage carousel
for how a modern site MUST LOOK, even though that look seems to have become popular more through lazy development than usability testing.

This is a normal post That's a reasonable point
There's no mention about whether the carousel should be switching slides by itself over time, though. And that's what I find most annoying about those things.

Whenever you actually get tricked to reading something there, the bloody thing rotates before you finish. THAT is the biggest reason I completely ignore them, even the ones crafted as your link suggests.

Not being a gamer, I've been only half-watching the GamerGate nonsense - but this is just nuts. This is a normal post Yep. It's rather odd.
I mean, I suppose there is a sense in which having someone chip away at your privilege could undermine your sense of yourself in some way - but you do then have to wonder at the mentality of someone whose basic complaint boils down to "I'm threatened by a demand for equal treatment! It's so unfair! I should probably kill some people!"

I think that's quite apt, it's impossible to tackle because no two people think its about the same thing, or at least what the most important bit is.
It's so convoluted you could believe it is about anything now and be sort of right, from the more logical (just angry teens unable to express themselves) to a viral media campaign to raise some profiles gone very wrong and on to the obvious "it's a plan by women to end gaming".

it's not as if you can play a football match with a quadcopter flying around just over head sporting a large flag, it would be a health hazard. Someone might get confused and mistake it for the football at some crucial moment.
