As a minor TJ, does anyone have any experience of using solid-state devices as RAM? I need to do a large calcuation and my computer doesn't quite cut it. I also have XP, so can't run Readyboost.

don't think you can
as it won't be in the memory bus.
You can use an SSD for swap space which may help but probably won't for calculations.
If you have a recent Nvidia graphics card you could use CUDA (which lets you do parallel computing on the GPU).

Aha.
I suspected it wouldn't be so easy...
I'll have a nose around and see what this thing is running. Pisser is, there was just enough room to write and crunch the second matrix and the third one that crashed it was only slightly bigger.

Fair point,
but this can't fit much more in and as it's a work laptop, it'd take nearly forever for the bloody thing to be ordered and arrive. Might still give it go, though.

You can either increase the size of the pagefile
(still slow) or stick the USB stick in and reassignment the pagefile to it.
Look at wizardcreations.wordpress.com/2007/11/16/how-to-get-readyboost-on-xp-using-your-flash-drive-as-a-page-file/ for a guide.

In that case
You can try de-fragmenting the disk, rebooting, then changing the pagefile size to either something very big (check how much free space you have) or letting Windows manage the size (which is an option in the settings).
I'm saying de-fragment the disk first because Windows needs the swapfile space to be contiguous (well, at least it used to). You could try moving any big files to a USB stick while you do the calculation to get an extra bit of space.
Just remember that depending on the size of the matrix and the operations, using *any* swap will make it veeeery slow, but at least it might not break!

Slow I don't mind
I can leave it running overnight (or maybe for a day or two). I'll have a tinker and see what happens.

I dun a edit
Which you may not notice. Move as much data off your computer to a USB stick before you start, this *should* free up some more space for the de-fragmentation.
Also, you might want to download a specialist de-fragmentation tool which might be better at moving those stubborn "unmoveable" files during de-fragmentation.

Apparently, I've still got a few hundred Gb of contiguous space.

technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897426
Dump it on your desktop, run it, reboot.
RAM is cheap and can be delivered quick - www.crucical.com/uk/ (Very easy to install)
Kill off other programs that are running. Go through all the stuff down by the click, right click, and exit them. Including the anti-virus.
Remember to feed the pixies by putting cheese slices in via the DVD drive.

I used to be in a "band"* called the Rastaz of Mok.
We filled two C90 tapes with unspeakable, unlistenable bilge that we thought was hilarious ("Roots" and "Thought-Emetic For The People")
Eventually, we kind of split, amicably. He became "Blondini" and I became "Craft Fair".
We didn't like to bother record companies or actually perform our drivel in public, because we knew, in our heart of hearts, it was shit.

And could we have musical differences?

Of course.
It wouldn't work without musical differences.
And if I'm involved, it'll inevitably degenerate into a howling, swirling, FX-drenched soup of inchoate wibbling noise with shouting over the top, so the musical differences will evolve perfectly naturally.
