have to admire his cheek with that "version original" - if it came out in 1972 it would have been three years after the real original by Gershon Kingsley.

for that to be a symptom of mental health problems themselves sufficient to be detained at a psychiatric hospital. Those posts are all crazy sounding but there are no direct threats against any individuals or organisations. if you think everyone who says stuff like this should be detained then you have to accept further encroachment on people's liberties regarding mental health legislation and the attendant cost of building lots and lots and lots more hospitals. cos as it stand in the uk people have to be a lot madder than that to be detained.

you're absolutely right. he could have been all kinds of psychotic when they got him to the station. then he may well have said or done something that would mean he should be detained. my point was only that he didn't meet criteria just for what he said online. we would need a whole other government agency for investigated wild internet claims if everyone who posted something a bit mental online had to be interviewed to see if they were crazy.
[edit] ""Sharpen up my axe; I'm here to sever heads," he posted Aug. 13." yeah. see that's much more worrying for starters...
although it has to be said that just having extreme politics or being very focused on conspiracy theories (which is aparently what worried his old commander) isn't indicative of mental ill health. i'm not disagreeing with what you're saying, i just think it's pretty weird that the fbi had the police take this dude to hospital. if he was very clearly going to do something illegal then taking him to the cop shop would be the better bet. the soviets took a lot of anti-government people to mental hospitals. they are a very good way to detain someone without evidence of a crime.

this is down to too few guns being involved in the situation. As our American cousins keep pointing out - if everyone's got a gun, situations like this don't happen. The chap who got shot clearly got this wrong and carried a knife instead. If he'd had a pistol, eerything would have been hunky dory.

what he really meant, I suspect, by "legitimate rape" is actual rape.
For a conservative Christian, the only valid form of birth control is, of course, abstinence.
( , Mon 20 Aug 2012, 11:20, Reply)

if a married couple didn't want a baby, but the man didn't have a condom, he could just rape his wife. Her magic body parts would acknowledge it was a rape scenario and reject the sperm.
It's not an ideal relationship, but it would be working out how his god intended.
( , Mon 20 Aug 2012, 11:25, Reply)

that in the case of a genuine rape the woman's own body would reject it (whether it is the sperm or the egg that gets rejected, before or after conception, isn't entirely clear), but I don't know how you jump from that to the idea that he thinks that rape is acceptable.
It's unfortunate in that it implies that any woman who does get pregnant from rape is lying.
( , Mon 20 Aug 2012, 11:29, Reply)

all the woman would need to do is go out and get raped, and her body would take care of disposing of the original unwanted one.
Which would therefore make rape a kind of birth control, thus greatly offending many Catholics and "Pro-Life"ers.
Westbro Baptist will start picketing dark alleys, holding placards reading "RAPE is WRONG!", which would be confusing in so many ways.

( , Mon 20 Aug 2012, 11:46, Reply)

What he meant by "legitimate rape" is, I think, what sane people might call aggravated rape. So, I think, "legitimate rape" is supposed to mean non-consensual sex with violence, as opposed to non-consensual sex without it - say, if it's only threatened, or if it's sex during sleep, or something like that. (See the penultimate paragraph here.)
( , Mon 20 Aug 2012, 12:02, Reply)

The phrase they are using there is "assault rape". As opposed to "statutory rape" such as sex with a minor, which is called rape even when it's consensual.

"As a member of Congress, I believe that working to protect the most vulnerable in our society is one of my most important responsibilities, and that includes protecting both the unborn and victims of sexual assault. In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it's clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year. Those who perpetrate these crimes are the lowest of the low in our society and their victims will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve.
"I recognize that abortion, and particularly in the case of rape, is a very emotionally charged issue. But I believe deeply in the protection of all life and I do not believe that harming another innocent victim is the right course of action. I also recognize that there are those who, like my opponent, support abortion and I understand I may not have their support in this election.
"But I also believe that this election is about a wide-range of very important issues, starting with the economy and the type of country we will be leaving our children and grandchildren. We've had 42 straight months of unacceptably high unemployment, trillion dollar deficits, and Democratic leaders in Washington who are focused on growing government, instead of jobs. That is my primary focus in this campaign and while there are those who want to distract from that, knowing they cannot defend the Democrats' failed economic record of the last four years, that will continue to be my focus in the months ahead."
So basically it is all the fault of the democrats.
