This guy has some great instructional videos and he sings the tabla rhythm before he plays it. Great stuff. Strangely this reminds me of the Eddie Izzard video when he speaks in French - Can't understand a word but know exactly what he means.
( , Tue 18 Oct 2011, 22:32, Reply)

Sometimes a student will go without tabla and will just learn to sing the rhythm and then go home and learn to play it on the tabla. It's like vocal sheet music if you will.

what's 'Steam'? And why would I want to install it?
( , Tue 18 Oct 2011, 22:27, Reply)

You download the games from teh interwebs and play dem! Steam's huge attraction is that it is account based so once you have bought a game it's yours for evah. If your machine dies, just redownload it. Never lose a CD again, say bye bye to hunting for CD keys on cases or losing them. It has a brilliant backup system if you want to try and avoid downloading more than once.
I buy from Steam pretty much exclusively now.
Games aren't cheaper, but Steam don't set the prices, publishers do.

( , Tue 18 Oct 2011, 23:39, Reply)

If I'm not desperate to play it (and I'm not with most games nowadays) I'll just wait for it to appear at a super low price in the Steam Store. Just picked up Metro 2033 for £3.50 last week. Fotally tanfastic.
There's always the concern that Steam turn evil and find reasons to ban everyone and take away your games...but I doubt that would happen, since it would hand all the power to EA's Origin service and Amazon.
( , Wed 19 Oct 2011, 0:01, Reply)

Gabe Newell is a huge advocate of lowering the price of games.
I used to pirate games almost exclusively. Now I buy almost exclusively because it's just so damned easy with Steam.

If we get enough, we could screen at one of the best cinemas in all of Los Angeles and be in the running for $10,000. The top 10 entries with the most "likes" are included in the festival-- and you could make it happen for us. It's no Mr. Splashy Pants, but I believe in the power of b3ta.
The video linked is the trailer to "like" but here is the full rundown of what can be done, as you can also vote on facebook (if you are into that sort of thing, which I know many of you are not)...
It would be a dream come true if we got in and it would help us greatly if you decided to take a brief moment to give us a click. If we end up winning the Grand Prize of $10,000 I would use the money to fly to England for a special screening/b3ta bash as it's better to thank in person and with beer.
That being said, it would also be a great help if this link is up on the popular page, as more people would see it and (hopefully) vote.
Well, I've splayed my spam and since I consider most of you to be pretty friendly, I'd like to keep it that way, so I'll shut up now.
Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the support. It's pretty reassuring to be able to know that I can count on b3ta in a time of need. You really do get back as much as you put in.
( , Tue 18 Oct 2011, 22:56, Reply)

( , Tue 18 Oct 2011, 23:00, Reply)

and thank you. Good call on pointing out where to find our vid on the facebook page.
As far as I'm concerned, if this film is being torrented, then people are interested in watching it. We haven't been able to afford to make DVDs or any merchandise for the film yet, therefore we can't make any money on it yet (except for donations through the film's website). I'd still like to get the film out there, even if it means we won't make our investment back. We still have some festival possibilities, too, but it's all "in the works".
We do have a ton of free content online that we didn't have room for in the actual film, which you are welcome to have your way with right here: vimeo.com/candela/videos

It's amazing, the number of links I see here and bookmark. If I remember correctly, that guy spent around the $8000 mark. The fact that he had bespoke PCBs made for the lighting should give a fair indication of how super serious he was about the whole project. Personally I prefer my models cheap and cheerful, not white and elephantine.

I don't plan to spend much at all with this project... even if I could I wouldn't. I mean, I calculate the whole thing would probably be around the £40-50 mark, depending on what helmet I get, what material, spray paint (saw a decent can for a fiver yesterday), etc.

Ok i can only speak for myself, I retract the rest of what I said. But I fail to see how your assumption about hypocrisy is any less an assumption. I'm just saying don't apply the standards of your own black and wizened soul to everyone else. What grounds would anyone have to object if they went around causing intentional suffering to insects all the time?
Personally i don't do it and havent since i was about 4 and had enough emotional maturity to empathise. So if I did object i certainly wouldn't be hypocritical. As it happens i dont give a fuck who or what you or the gentlemen in the video choose to kill needlessly. Knock yourselves out.

I would underline unnecessary. I have no issues with killing stuff as humanely as possible for food or territory. Minor annoyance, a whim, or because the Internet wants to see just isn't a good enough reason for me thats all.
Like i said I'm not trying to moralise or persuade here. Just saying if i found this video offensive it wouldn't be hypocritical.
*edit* likewise - you make a good point and it is actually something I personally do think about and would agonise over. I'm sure many would think it pretty daft.

Oh, it's a man doing exactly what Itv show on 'I'm a celebrity' during prime time. Not big or clever, but hardly worthy of the level of vitriol that is already at bursting point. It looked like it was over pretty quick.
I was a vegetarian for 10 years (by choice).
But i wouldn't think twice about swatting flies or those wasp muthafuckers.
And Mosquitoes can get to fuck with their killing around a million people each year.

If you're amazed at unnecessary vitriol, you must not be that familiar with the internet

I come to B3ta to cheer up and have a giggle.
Ethics completely aside for one moment - this is not the sort of thing that fits in around here.

I couldn't care less about the scorpian. But is the video entertaining? No; not to me- it is a scruffy man eating. Is it informative? No. Is it funny? Nope. Is it some guy on an ego trip trying to impress people by doing something gross? Bingo!
I'm afraid I don't have a lot of time for people like that. What next, he eats his own shit and posts it? Would anyone find that any more entertaining?
( , Tue 18 Oct 2011, 23:53, Reply)

if he posted a video of himself eating his own shit I would watch it.

Namely that this poster is obviously a massive Spamcunt.
Do fuck off, there's a good chap

Whatever your take on the poster, and yes, he definitely does seem to be a Spamcunt, there are an awful lot of posters willing to share their own opinions on the subject. I really am not taking the piss.I find watching B3tans discussing the morality issues over a pointless but subjective video more entertaining than the video itself.

It's one of the bits of my philosophy degree that I still think about from time to time. Basically I don't believe for a moment that insects, arachnids, worms, slugs, snails, oysters etc have any kind of consciousness, they simply don't have the processing power. Assuming they aren't conscious, they can't suffer.
It's impossible to test of course, but I reckon they are more akin to little robots carrying out actions without thought than like higher creatures.
I reckon pretty much any vertebrate can experience suffering, though a lot of people would probably disagree that reptiles are conscious. Some people would probably disagree about fish as well, notably vegetarians who eat fish. It seems pretty clear the octopi and squid are switched on as well.
So anyway yeah on that basis I don't reckon there's any cruelty involved in eating a live scorpion any more than there is eating a live oyster.
Feel free to disagree, no-one can prove it one way or the other for certain so it's a purely philosophical question really. And I'm not about to eat a scorpion alive or otherwise. But I do very much like eating oysters alive and i don't reckon there's anything wrong with that.

I have never understood vegetarians who eat fish, that's just like a tea totaler drinking only wine....

nice to see someone use some logic on the subject.
I feel some people aren't conscious either, they do such stupid things that they couldn't possibly all be concscious, just saying like...
( , Wed 19 Oct 2011, 21:39, Reply)

I can tell you they are definitely conscious and anyone who disagrees is a cunt.

you would be the first to kill it with hammers if it was in your tent or sleeping bag, probably be up for a witchetty grub too, why don't you vent your frustrations on ITV and the stupid "GET ME OUTTA HERE!" Shite they ceaselously produce or Gordon Ramsays puffin habit? I'll bet all of you have slapped a mosquito or fly. Just because it's bigger doesn't make it more wrong he just couldn't fit a panda in his mouth. I'd eat an ant for a bet.
( , Wed 19 Oct 2011, 23:24, Reply)

another pet hate of mine; albeit slightly irrational. 'I'd do it for a bet' or; 'I wouldn't normally do this, but it is for charity'. Bullcrap. People who say this ALWAYS want to do it to impress their mates but want the comfort zone in case is doesn't. Then they have a fall back posistion. They want to be daring, eccentric or LOLWACKY but instantly prove they aren't by filming it, sponsoring it or telling all their friends about it. True daring, eccentrics and whacky people just do this stuff and wonder why anyone else gives a shit when they find out.
